HSO408

Assessment Task 4: Competency Oral Presentation

Due date: 16 or 17 October 2019 – time and date TBC with each student

Weighting: 40% (equivalent to 3200 words)

Assessment Outline & Marking Criteria Form

Requirements:
This assessment will be the final assessment of HSO408 and will enable students to present themselves in a formal setting as a
competent occupational therapist. The oral presentation will consist of a 10 minute presentation to a panel, consisting of a marker and
two peers. Following the presentation, five (5) minutes question time will occur in which all members of the panel will ask a question
to the student presenting.
The oral presentation will use the Australian Occupational Therapy Competency Standards (AOTCS) (Occupational Therapy Board of
Australia, 2018), as a central focus with each student being randomly allocated one (1) ‘Standard’ which they will present. The
presentation will allow students to demonstrate their critical analysis of the ‘Standard’ and provide evidence to support their individual
level of competency at this point in time. The oral presentation will provide an opportunity for students to demonstrate their
knowledge of critical issues influencing occupational therapy practice and how these in combination with the competencies presented
will influence their transition to practice.

The presentation style that you wish to utilise during this assessment is entirely for the student to decide, within the context of a
formal / professional oral presentation.
Your oral presentation should include:
 An introduction of yourself, what occupational therapy is and what competencies within the occupational therapy profession
are, including a concise discussion of AOTCS and what this represents with consideration of challenges that may be faced by
the profession directly relating back to competencies.
 Identify, explore and critically analyse the one (1) ‘Standard’ of AOTCS that has been allocated to you, within the context of
occupational therapy practice, taking into consideration current and future influences including environmental, political and
social.
 Critically analyse your own level of competency within the ‘Standard’, relating back to the previous information.
 Present a portfolio of evidence to support your current level of competency.
 Conclude with a statement about you and your thoughts of transitioning from student to occupational therapist.
