Compressed Air System Operation

SYSTEM PURPOSE
• The Compressed Air system is designed to generate and supply compressed
air for ship systems by:
 Compressed Starting Air System;
 Control & Service Air System

• To ensure the functionality of the components in the compressed air

system, the compressed air has to be dry and clean from solid particles and
oil.
COMPRESSED STARTING AIR SYSTEM
• The Starting Air System produces and supplies compressed air for starting
MEs and DEs.
• All engines are started by means of compressed air with a nominal pressure
of 3 MPa (30 bar).
• The start is performed by direct injection of air into the cylinders through
the starting air valves in the cylinder heads.
• The master starting valve is built on the engine and can be operated both
manually and electrically.

SYSTEM PURPOSE
• In automatic operating mode, when the pressure in the main receivers drops
<26 bar (default) the LEAD compressor automatically starts.
• If the pressure continues to reduce <24 bar (default) then the FOLLOW
compressor starts.

• When the pressure reaches 28 bar the FOLLOW compressor stops. The

LEAD compressor stops when the pressure reaches 30 bar.


• The compressors can be also operated manually from the LOP.

CONTROL & SERVICE AIR SYSTEM


• The Control & Service Air System produces and supplies com pressed air
for pneumatic mechanisms (e.g. valves, pumps) and safety and control
devices.
• In automatic operating mode, when the pressure in the Air receiver drops
<7.5 bar the compressor automatically starts.
• The compressor can be also operated manually from the LOP.

177 m3/h x 30 bar, LT CFW-cooled; each unit comprising:

 First Stage Air Compressor and Air Cooler;


 Second Stage Air Compressor and Air Cooler;
 LO Driven Pump, LT Cooling Pump, bar graph of the compressor
LO level, %, digital indicator of oil pressure;
 Digital indicators of the air temperature and pressure.

• EM’CY Shut-Off V/V LOP box with controlled supply valves
• To Fire Dampers, Group 1, Group 2, Group 3;
• Pipelines with valves, filters, measuring gauges.

MAIN AIR COMPRESSORS LOP & GSP CONTROL


Main air compressors are operated:
• Manually from LOP: the selector switch on LOP is in LOCAL
position;
• Remotely: selector switch on LOP is in REMOTE position:

MAIN COMPRESSORS CONTROL AT ECR
• Click on the menu item ECR PID of the page ECR to open the
MAIN AIR COMPRESSORS panel. Control is available when on the
compressor LOP selector switch is in REMOTE position
• Click on the menu item ECR PID of the page ECR to open the
MAIN AIR COMPRESSORS panel. Control is available when on
the compressor LOP selector switch is in REMOTE position
The panel contains:
• No 1 MAIN AIR COMPRESSOR and No 2 MAIN AIR
COMPRESSOR buttons to start/stop compressors;
• Three-position switch to set lead and follow compressors:
 NO 1 LEAD, NO 2 FOLLOW – automatic operation;
 MANUAL – operation by start/stop buttons on this panel and on the MSB starter;
 NO 2 LEAD, NO 1 FOLLOW – automatic operation.

• The panel contains:

 No 1 (No 2) MAIN AIR COMPRESSOR LOPs


 Alarm indicator lamps illuminate:
→ AIR HIGH TEMP – temp. > 80 °C;
→ OIL LOW LEVEL – level < 10%;
→ OVER CURRENT TRIP.
 RESET button to acknowledge alarms

• Use Pressure Switch LEAD and Pressure Switch FOLLOW to


setpoint the automatic starting (pressure =RANGE-DIFF value)
and stopping (pressure =RANGE value) of the compressors.
• LEAD and FOLLOW compressors are set on the ECR PID
Settings panel (use menu item ECR PID of the page ECR)
