Sports Injuries

High school sports are a good addition to a high school career because they teach

leadership skills, teamwork, and good sportsmanship while keeping kids healthy and fit. Some

high school sports teach teamwork because students are on a team and have to work together to

win. They also help with child obesity; Dr. William O. Roberts states, “I am still more worried

about the high rate of inactivity and obesity in children” (qtd. in “High School. . .” par. 26). In

this quote, Dr. Roberts explains why he thinks that unfit and obese children are more of a

problem than injuries in sports. Micah Issitt explains in his article “Responsible Solutions to

Concussion-Related Injuries” that sports leagues are coming up with ways to prevent, detect, and

treat concussions (par. 16). Concussions are caused by hard hits that cause the brain to move in

the skull. However, others argue that the risk of high school sports outweigh the benefits, but

most do not believe that sports should be abolished completely. Instead, once a bad injury

happens and an athlete is very likely to get another bad injury, they will be banned from that

sport (par. 31). Sports help students fill time in their days with a fun activity that is healthy for

them and still fun. While the risks may be high, the benefits are still there and outweigh the risks.
