Location of the Fuel pump

To find the fuel injection pump on a 4440 JD Tractor go to the right side of the tractor and look
for a part that looks like part No. 13 below.

1. Sealing Washer
2. Oil Line
3. Aneroid
4. Oil Line
5. Gear
6. Self-Locking/Screw/Washer
7. Stud
8. Washer
9. Nut
10. Fuel pump
11. Elbow Fitting
12. O-Ring

Removal of Fuel Injection Pump
First clean the injecton pump, pipes and area around the pump with a 3
cleaning solvent. This next step is very important never steam clean or pour cold
water on an injection pump while the pump is running or while it’s warm, This
may cause a seizure of the pump.

Now for the removal process follow these steps closely.

9 1. Find the shut off valve at the bottom of the fuel tank
2. Position the engine at TDC at No. 1 on the compression stroke
3. Remove the timing gear cover from the engine. Then remove the three cap screws
that fasten the injection pump drive gear to the pump drive hub.
4. Disconnect the supply pump inlet and outlet pipes.
5. Disconnect and remove the lubrication pipe. The pipe connects oil filter body to the
aneroid activator.
6. Install the turning tool and pin to the flywheel housing. Remove the timing hole plug
and by looking into the hole, look when the pump drive
6
hub mark comes inline with the pointer mark as the
engine turns. At this point the timing pin should fall into
place in the flywheel. Rotate the engine slightly till you
can push the pin all the way in.
8 7. Disconnect injection pump fuel inlet line
8. Disconnect the speed control and rod fuel shut off cable
9. Disconnect intake manifold-to-aneroid pipe
10. Disconnect the fuel delveriary pipes using the CS-2428 line wrench. It is
advisable to hold the hex portion of the delivery valve holder with a wrench while
loosening the fuel pipes. This will prevent the delivery valve holder from possibly
wanting to loosen.
11. Disconnect the fuel return line

Installation
1. Check the engine timing to make sure that the No. 1 3
compression stroke is at TDC. If the enigine was rotatated
after the injection pump was removed, crank the engine until
the marks are lined up
2. Install new O-Ring on the bearing plate. Lightly lubercate the
9 O-Ring to make installation of the pump easier and also
prevents damage to the O-Ring.
3. Remove the filler plug from the side of the pump and add 3/4 of US pint of the
engine oil in the pump crankcase. oil should be at the same grade as they used
in the engine. Install filler plug, access oil drain out the holes near the oil ring at
the front of the pump to the automatically provide the correct oil level in the
pump housing.
8 4. Mounting injection pump on the engine, being careful not to damage the O-
Ring during installation. Install mounting stud nuts and washers.
5. Place injection pump drive gear in the timing gear housing 10
with the dish in gear facing frontward.
6. Install the drive gear on the pump drive hub positioning
7/11 the gear so that the cap screws which secure the gear to
the drive hub will be approximate center of the gear
slots. Doing so will permit the pump timing to be changed should need arise.
7. Rotate the engine 1 1/2 revolutions in direction of the rotation.
Continue to turn the engine until the timing pin drops in the flywheel hole for
TDC.
8. Recheck the alignment of the injection pump timing marks. If the marks are not
in line, loosen the pump gear cap screws, and bring marks to into alignment.
9. Important: the normal backlash of gears is enough to throw pump timing off by
several degrees, resulting in poor engine
6
performance. Therefore, it is very important that
the timing of the pump be rechecked after it has
been installed. To avoid backlash always
approached the timing marks on the pointer by
turning the engine in the direction of rotation.
10. Tighten drive gear caps and pump mounting stud
nuts to 35 foot pounds. Install timing hole plug in cover plate.
11. Remove all protective caps from pipe in hose connections.

5
12. Reverse the number removal steps found on page 4 except for step seven.
Instead of reversing step #7 for the removal process tighten the fuel pipe
connectors to 20 foot pounds.
13. Leave the speed control rod and fuel shut-off cable disconnected until the
pump idle speeds have been checked.
14. Open the fuel shutoff valve and bleed the fuel system
15. Start engine and check for leaks especially check for leaks at the pump
lubrication pipe connections.
16. To prevent loss of engine lubricating oil repair as required to stop leakag of fuel
and lubricating oil.
17.If you have any trouble locating parts look at the figure on page 3.
