CORROSION CREEPBACK TEST METHOD GMo102P 1 SCOPE, This tst method describes the procedure to be used for scribing previously painted specimens, removal of sabe ine corrosion products and the measurement ofthe loss of adneson fom the scribed line due to eomosive creepback. 2 APPARATUS. 2.1 AIR SOURCE, The air blow off equipment consists of ‘anair supply capable of obtaining an open line pressure of 550 ‘kPa tough « nozzle widsa 3.0 mun outa orfce. The length Of the hose between the nozale and the air regular is recom- ‘mended to be less than 3 meters andthe inside diameter of the hose be between 6 and 10 mm. 2.1.1 SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS. Au enclosed cabines, « ‘commercial glass peening cabinet, or a sandblasting cabinet with a viewing window. mubber gloves. foot switch, dust col- lector and magnetic sample holder are recommended for panels and small pars. Parts too large forthe above cabinet may be blown off outside the cabinet if tariers, bales or screens are provided to pro- tect the operator and ote individuals near the area where the air is being used. The guard that is used must be placed ‘betsten the air nozzle and the operator. 2.2 SCRIBING TOOL. A straight shank, tungsten carbide tip lathe cutting tool. A carbide industry code E thread cutting tool (or equivalen) is required. 2.3 STRAIGHTEDGE (OPTIONAL). Any straightedge of Sufficient length and thickness to guide the scribing tool in a staight line may be used. The shank of the tool should follow the guide in order to ensure a uniform V cut. The carbide tip ‘must not come into contact with the guide. 24 SCALE. Any mule or scale with 1 mim divisions may be used. A transparent scale is helpful for obtaining the measure: ments, 3. SPECIMEN PREPARATION. Prepare specimens for test by serbing ina direction that will allow the scribed line to ’be exposed in a vertical direction unless otherwise specified. Hold the seribing tool at approximately 45* to the surface ‘Position tool and seibe in such a manner that de tip Will make ppoint contact resulting in a uniform V cut in the film (see Figure 1) The seve mer penetrate all preveatment and coat ings on the metal. leaving a uniform bright ine. Avoid scribing rear any edges NOTE: A continuity meter check is recommended to ensure the serbe is down to the base metal FIGURE 1 - SCRIBING 4 EXPOSURE OF TEST SPECIMEN. Expose time and test pmoedure must he specified hy reference dacument or test requestor 5 PROCEDURE. 5.1. Immediately after removal from the exposure test (within 15 mimutes) oF as siored per Section 5.2. air blow the entire scribe line and any other poin's of indicated failure with the faorzle held against and approximatcly 45° to the surface. To insure an opening for the air blast, disturb corroded areas along the scribe line by scrubbing with the nozzle tp (must scrub haré enough to break the pain/corosion build Up). 5.2. When a large number of specimens are involved, itis impractical to air blast all the specimens within 15 minutes. In these cases the specimens must be immersed in water or stored in a humitity cabinet to avoid any drying effec. Neither the Water immersion nor humidity temperatures shall exceed 40 + 2. 5.2 Afr air Blow off, sinio and dry the aposimens to facil tate examination. ‘3.8 Unless otherwise specified on paint specification or draw- ing, evaluate seribe line creepback by measuring the distance between the unaffected paint surfaces on each side of the scribe line (See Figure 2). Measure 0 the nearest millimeter the maximum (ota creepback from unafecied paint surface 10 ‘unaffected pint surface. © Convert SSPTEMEER 100" Gra olan Cartan 8 Rare Ptr SEPTEMBER 1997 PAGE 1 ‘9102P CORROSION CREEPBACK TEST METHOD ‘@Mo102P 6 GENERAL INFORMATION.
