Internet and Intranet
Description:
When working, playing, and researching information online you have to use the Internet. Having a basic understanding of what the
Internet is and how it works is an important skill to have in today’s world. Also, there are times when you will be working in a closed
network which is called an intranet. Knowing the difference between the Internet and the intranet can be quite useful.

For this project, you will explain what the Internet is, how it works, and then explain the different between the intranet and the
Internet.

Steps for Completion:

1. Answer the following questions in the space provided:
a. Describe what the Internet is.

b. Explain the difference between the intranet and the Internet.

Define Network Topologies
Description:
There are several different methods used to network computers so they can communicate together. Having a basic understanding of
how these different networks work will help you set up your own network or troubleshoot problems with a network.

For this project, you will define the different network topologies.

DNS and IP Addresses
Description:
When you are working on the Internet there are two different methods of navigating to specific web addresses. You can use a DNS or
IP address to navigate to different websites. The most commonly used of these navigation methods is DNS.

For this project, you will use the following document to match which options are DNS and which are IP addresses.

Steps for Completion:

1. Match which options are DNS and which are IP addresses.

Define Domain Types
Description:
While working with DNS you will use and see many different domain types. Having a solid understanding of what each domain type
represents will help you find the best information or find the types of sites that best fit your needs. For this project, you will define the
various domain types. Choose four of the domains and write a brief explanation about why you would or would not use that type of
site to do research.

Steps for Completion:

1. Define the terms below:
a. .com: e. .net:

b. .edu: f. .org:

c. .gov: g. .us:

d. .mil: h. .uk:

Bits to Bytes
Description:
Bits and bites are common terms used when working with networks. A bit is the smallest unit of data in a computer, while a byte is
what is used to hold a strings of bits. Just as with millimeters and centimeters, inches and feet, there are levels of bytes.

For this project, you will write out the various levels of bits and bytes, starting with the smallest and working your way up to the
highest.

Steps for Completion:

1. Write the various levels of bits and bytes, beginning with the smallest and going up to the largest level:

Streaming
Description:
When working online there are many options for streaming media. These options allow you to watch video and listen to audio via the
Internet. The Internet even gives you the ability to watch or listen to media live.

For this project, you will set up an account for an online radio station such as Spotify or Pandora. Then watch a movie using an online
option such as Youtube or Vimeo.

Steps for Completion:

1. Create an account for an online radio.
2. Stream a video using Youtube or Vimeo.

Research and Evaluate
Description:
When using the Internet to do research, it is important to know how to find information and to know if the information is actually
true or if someone just made it up. When you do research a great deal you will have certain sites you will use more frequently than
others. Having quick access to these sites can help make research easier and more efficient.

For this project, you will first set up your browser so that you can search using the search engine you like best. You will need to choose
whether your search box uses Google, Yahoo, or Bing. Then place three websites in your Bookmark Toolbar. Then go through the
process of researching your chosen topic using keywords. You will also choose five sources, and evaluate those five sources. You will
need to describe the process you used to find the information and why you chose that information. Then you will need to evaluate the
information using the three criteria of authority, accuracy, and currency. Lastly, you will need to cite the sources you found.

Steps for Completion:

1. Set up browser.
2. Choose a research topic.
3. Place three websites in the Bookmark toolbar.
4. Find five sources and write a description of why you chose those sources.
5. Evaluate the five sources. This should be at least a page of information.
6. Cite the five sources.
