2021 Virtual Lesson Plan Format

Teacher Name J.Tran Date 3/8 & 3/9

Course Art I Period 1A, 3B

Lesson Topic Expressive Hands – Concept SOL/Standard AI.1, AI.3

I. OBJECTIVES: (The objectives should be stated in the “I will be able to” format.)
I will be able to practice identifying the elements of art in an artwork and articulate my thoughts
on how I define and interpret the artwork.
II. HIGHER LEVEL QUESTIONING: (The HLQ should be a theme for the class, a strategy requiring
students to apply learned objectives to answer with critical thinking skills.)
How do we find the elements of art in a sculpture? How do we interpret the work we see and the
meaning behind three dimensional work.
III. ACTIVITIES: (A brief description of the lesson line)
1. Warm-Up -
● Form: Look at the image. Do you know what it is? What can you see in the image?
(Image: Shiva Nataraja, 12th-13th century)
2. Hook/Anticipatory Set --
● Discuss initial thoughts and impressions of the artwork.
3. Direct Instruction --
● Expand on initial thoughts with class discussion: What is happening in the statue? Who is
this? What does it mean? Guide students through discussing the artwork and its
interpretations. Transition to talking about the hands in the statue – Shiva is making
symbols known as mudras – and each one has a specific meaning meant to guide the
understanding of the work. Move into discussing the expressiveness and complexity of
hands.
● Tutorial on planning an expressive hand drawing – look at mudras, look at how we use
hands to signal things – look at sign language! Pick something from either mudras or sign
language to be your guide for planning. What is something you want to express/talk
about, but sometimes words just don’t always capture?
4. Guided Practice --
● Students will participate in class-wide discussion of an artwork and follow along during
tutorial while responding to probing questions.
5. Independent Practice -
● Begin drafting thumbnail ideas for expressive hands
6. Asynchronous Independent Practice -
● Expressive Hands Thubmnails
● Begin Reflection Journal
7. Closure –
● Exit Ticket – Skill check discussion: Value vs Color in Expression

IV. STUDENT ASSESSMENT: (Techniques and tools used to assess the students’ knowledge and
understanding of the objectives taught.)
 Formative – Warm Up, Discussion, Exit Ticket
 Summative – N/A

V. OBJECTIVES: (The objectives should be stated in the “I will be able to” format.)
I will be able to practice drawing from observation and pen techniques through planning, drafting,
and refining an expressive hand drawing
VI. HIGHER LEVEL QUESTIONING: (The HLQ should be a theme for the class, a strategy requiring
students to apply learned objectives to answer with critical thinking skills.)
How do we create expressive images from observation drawings? How can we portray the
complexity of the hand using pen techniques?
VII.ACTIVITIES: (A brief description of the lesson line)
8. Warm-Up -
● Form: Which did you choose – mudra or sign language? Or something else? Why?
What’s your message/emotion that you’re trying to articulate?
9. Hook/Anticipatory Set --
● Discuss the planning process again – thumbnails, thumbnails, thumbnails!
10. Direct Instruction --
● Review the thumbnail process and how to plan hand movements in such a small format.
Provide additional feedback, instruction, and support as needed. Remind students that
initial thumbnails don’t have to be super accurate. Include that once thumbnails are done,
they can transition straight to doing a rough sketch with their top idea
● Tutorial: Hand Drawing Basics – Tips for drawing those pesky complex digits of ours!
11. Guided Practice --
● Students will participate in discussion, answer probing questions, and follow along
during tutorial.
12. Independent Practice -
● Continue planning thumbnails, transitioning to rough sketch as they submit those.
13. Asynchronous Independent Practice -
● Finish & Submit Thumbnails
● Finish & Submit Journal
14. Closure –
● Exit Ticket – Check in – how we feelin’ about this one so far? Does the project seem
exciting? Daunting? Both?
