Permaculture Design Project

Goals Statement:

● We design a finance plan, for up to 5 years in the future, where the budget is used

efficiently and not wasted.

○ A yearly plan to collect materials needed for garden upkeep

○ Soil, mulch, seeds, gardening tools, etc.

○ What portion of the budget should be used for community events?

○ Boosting campus and Canton community engagement

● We create an internship position with a job description

○ One person will take care of the garden over the summer

■ Maintaining the garden by trimming, mulching, watering, harvest etc.

■ One person to communicate with the school administration and coordinate

with other groups on campus in order to get more community involvement

● We draw a to scale base map of the garden that includes: North arrow, existing paths,

existing garden beds, trees and shrubs, any hardscaping (such as benches, rocks, signage),

compost bin, trash bins, parking lot, sidewalk, any trees that shade the garden

● We upload these items into the Sustainability Program Digital Portfolio by April 12th

Annual Plan of Work:

Spring

Early spring
● Work on any hardscaping (shed, concrete, water pump, 2 bay mulch/soil bin)
● Clean out any debris and weed
● Start seeds indoors (where will this be done?)
● Prune fruit trees
● Plant hardy, cold season crops (potatoes, artichokes, etc)
Mid-Spring
● Add new trees
● Apply mulch and compost
Late Spring
● Transplant warm season veggies (tomatoes, peppers, herbs, etc)
● Plant summer blooming bulbs (dahlias, gladiolus)

Summer

All summer
● Weeding
● Mulching
● Watering
● Deadhead perennials
● Harvest as needed
Late summer
● Plant for fall

Fall

All Fall
● Evaluate what went well/poor in the season
● Remove annuals
● Plant spring blooming bulbs (tulips, daffodils, crocuses)
● Rake, mulch with leaves
● Harvest
● Plant garlic
● Put away anything that could be damaged over winter
● Plant cover crops
● Gather herbs for drying
● Cut back perennials

Yearly Objectives:
● We incorporate a garden tool shed (2021)
● Facilities installs a new water pump and fireplace (2021)
● We hold workshops and host local guest speakers at the garden (Fall 2022)
● We donate some of the harvest to Campus Kitchens to help fight local food
insecurity (every year)

Intern Job Description:

Location: Canton, NY. St. Lawrence University


Job Title: Permaculture Garden Manager
Job Type: Paid Internship
Description:
St. Lawrence University is looking for current students interested in spending a portion of
their summer outside managing the permaculture garden. The permaculture garden, located
behind Commons College, provides fresh local food for the campus. The intern will be working
on managing the site over the summer (ie. harvesting, weeding, cleaning, etc.). This is a paid
summer internship with room and board provided by the university. This is a new position; intern
is expected to work for 10 weeks (40-hour weeks) and will be paid $8/hour.
Qualifications:
§ Prior experience with managing a garden as they will be mostly working
independently
§ Willingness to work outside in different types of weather
§ Physically able to handle work in the gardens such as digging, lifting,
bending, etc.
§ Strong organizational and communication skills
§ Capable of solving problems creatively
Responsibilities:
§ Keeping the garden clean
§ Ensuring the health of the soil and plants
§ Collaborating with the administration and groups on campus
§ Solving problems creatively
