Research is both a logical and systematic approach to information which are new
and useful on a specific topic. It is important regardless of the field you are trying to
take, whether scientific or nonscientific. In this life, there are new problems, events,
phenomena, and processes that are happening every day. With these arising, the need
for implementable solutions and suggestions are a must. Science in its general sense
may refer to the experiences that humans have grasped through experimentation or
experience. Whenever you are planning to start a project in research, developing
research questions, and creating your research design, you will eventually have to
decide on which track and type of research you would like to do.

The research is divided into two main classes namely, Fundamental and Applied
Research. Fundamental research or basic research is an investigation on the basic
principles and reasons on the happenings of a specific event or process or
phenomenon. However, in applied research, it solves a particular problem which
employs well known and accepted theories and principles. It is later broken down into
specific concepts namely, normal research and revolutionary research. Normal research
in any particular field is done in accordance with a set of procedures, rules, and
concepts which are greatly accepted by the researchers who are working in their
respective fields. Moreover, the basic and applied researches may also be classified to
quantitative or qualitative or even both in some instances.

The UST Main Building was one of the buildings that served as the living
quarters of the Japanese which made me think that it’s one of the phenomena that
should be considered in the university. Throughout its 400 years of existing, it has
witnessed too many significant episodes in the lives of the Filipino and their growth as a
nation which truly is a place that has very much contributed to the nation’s history. With
these being said, historical, case study, and conceptual research are the three ways to
analyze this phenomenon. Historical research can be undertaken to answer queries that
concerns the causes, effects that relate to past events. This may include a review of
written materials during the Japanese and American occupation. However, Case Study
Research entails in-depth investigation of a single individual, group, or event to explore
the underlying principles. An oral documentation from the people who stayed during its
time as an internment camp could be a possible way to investigate a phenomenon
within its real-life context. And lastly, Conceptual Research is defined by conducting an
observation and analyzation of the present information on a given topic. It doesn’t
involve any conducting practical experiments, but related to abstract concepts or ideas.
This would be of great help since prior to this paper, a lot of research work has been
done already by some researchers in the past with regard to the state and history of the
Main Building and can develop new theories or interpret existing theories in a different
light.
