Activity 1.B :

What to do: Below are famous lines and their secular interpretations/meanings taken
from William Ernest Henley's Invictus. Examine each meaning presented and give
your own personal interpretation of the lines.

1.Under the bludgeonings of chance

My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Secular Interpretation: The line, expressing fierce defiance; wounded or

________________________________
2.Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

Secular Interpretation: These lines of 'Invictus' explain how the individual

differentiates the fact that there will be circumstances in the future that he cannot
prevent from happening. However, the past troubled years have prepared the
individual for the future ones. The approaching years must stand and be ready to find
the person unafraid and ready to overcome the hardships that the forthcomings will
provide.

My personal interpretation: ____________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________
________________________________

3.It matters not how strait the gate,

How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.

Secular Interpretation: These words are basically interpreting how a person is the
controller of his/her own life. Whatever they encounter in life, or whatever life throws
at them, they are the 'captain of their soul ‘ or they can manage their own life.

My personal interpretation: ____________________________________________________

READER’S READING EXPERIENCE

Name: ___________________________________________Section: ____________________

Learning Objective:

- Subtask competency: Focuses on the reader’s reading experience.

- Time Allotment: 60 minutes, 5 days a week (Quarter 3 Week 8 Day 2)

What is Reader-Response?

 It is a type of criticism that focuses on the activity of reading a work of

literature.

 The connection between a reader’s experience and the text is far more
important than the structure.

 Proponents of this believe that literature has no objective meaning or existence,

rather people bring their own thoughts, moods, and experiences.

Example:

Whenever I watched the Korean series “Reply 1988” I remember my childhood

experience with our neighbors- the camaraderie, the life free from any gadgets, and
the sharing of food. We had a simple life which is different from today.

Thus, the role of the reader is essential to the meaning of a text, for only in the
reading experience does the literary work come alive.

Activity 1.2: MAKING SENSE WITH MY EMOTION

What to do: Below are lines taken from songs. Identify what emotion is aroused or
activated. Then, tell what life experience you can identify with it.

A heart that’s broke is a heart that’s been loved

-Supermarket Flowers
Ed Sheeran

2. Couldn’t put my phone down

Scrolling patiently
It’s all the same to me
Just faces on a screen

-Comethru
Jeremy Zucker

3. Leaves will soon grow from the

bareness of trees
And all will be alright in time

-Leaves
Ben&Ben
4. I’ve been a victim of a selfish kind of love
It’s time that I realize
That there are some with no home, not a nickel to loan
Could it be really me, pretending that
They’re not alone?

-Man in the Mirror

Michael Jackson

5. I’m trying to realize

It’s alright to not be fine on your own

KALEIDOSCOPE WORLD
By Francis M.

So many faces, so many races

Let the bassline strum to the bang of the
Different voices, different choices
drum
Some are mad, while others laugh
Some can swim while some will sink
Some live alone with no better half
And some will find their minds and think
Others grieve while others curse
Others walk while others run
And others mourn behind a big black hearse
You can't talk peace and have a gun
Some are pure and some half-bred
Some are hurt and start to cry
Some are sober and some are wasted
Don't ask me how don't ask me why
Some are rich because of fate and
Some are friends and some are foes
Some are poor with no food on their plate
Some have some while some have most
Some stand out while others blend
Some are fat and stout while some are thin Every color and every hue
Some are friends and some are foes Is represented by me and you
Some have some while some have most Take a slide in the slope
Take a look in the kaleidoscope
Every color and every hue
Spinnin' round, make it twirl
Is represented by me and you
In this kaleidoscope world
Take a slide in the slope
Take a look in the kaleidoscope
Spinnin' round, make it twirl
In this kaleidoscope world

Some are great and some are few

Others lie while some tell the truth
Some say poems and some do sing
Others sing through their guitar strings
Some know it all while some act dumb

My interpretation of the song is ___________________________________________________.

I can associate it with______________________________________________.

Reflection:

If I were a songwriter , the theme of my song would be about___________________

because ________________________ .
