DIFFERENT LITERARY GENRES

OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, the students are able to:

1. identify the different literary genres;


2. discuss the benefits from resding literary works;
3. explain how truth is revealed in imaginative literature;
4. present details and ideas through semantic maps;
5. extract information and draw out conclusions about people in the past.

MOTIVATING ACTIVITY
Literary pieces such as stories, poetry, essays have always been enjoyed by people of all
ages. This must be because they reflect our own true experience in life.

With your exposure to various literary pieces in the past, and the present, define literature.

INPUT

What is literature?

 Literature refers to compositions that deal with life experiences. It tells stories, dramatizes
situations, expresses, emotions, analyzes, and advocates ideas.
 In the past, literary works were recited or sung, and were retained only as long as people
performed these oral acts by which these literary traditions are handed down from
generation to generation.
 Literature helps us grow, both personally and intellectually.
 Through reading, literature shapes our goals and values by clarifying our own identities--
both positively and negatively.

Types of Literature: The Genres

Literature is classified into four categories or genres


1. Prose Fiction - A literary work that is wholly or partly imagined or theoretical. Examples are
novels.
2. Poetry - literary work in which special intensity is given to the expression of feelings and ideas by
the use of distinctive style and rhythm; poems collectively or as a genre of literature
3. Drama - a play for theater, radio, or television. an exciting, emotional, or unexpected series of
events or set of circumstances.
4. Nonfiction Prose - any literary work that is based mainly on fact, even though it may contain
fictional elements. Examples are the essay and biography. Nonfictional prose.
 The first three are classified as imaginative literature.
 The genres of imaginative literature have distinguishing characteristics Prose fiction or
narrative fiction includes myths, parables, romances, novels and short stories.
Fiction refers to prose stories based on the author’s imagination.
