Introduction
Potential energy known as energy at rest means that the object are not in motion, while kinetic
energy is energy in motion refer as moving energy.
Kinetic and potential energy can be computed using the formula below
POTENTIAL ENERGY
P.E.=mgh
Where: P.E. = Potential Energy ( unit J or Joule)
m= mass (kg)
g= gravity (9.8 m/s2) (m/s2)
h= height (m)
KINETIC ENERGY
K.E. = 1/2mv2
Where: K.E = Kinetic Energy (J or Joule)
m= mass (kg)
v2= speed or velocity (m/s)
Let’s try!!!
a. Arnold throw a ball with a mass of 2.1 kg at the height of 2.0m. find the Potential Energy of a ball.
Given: P.E. = ? Formula: P.E. = mgh solution: P.E. (2.1kg)( 9.8 m/s2)(2.0m)
m = 2.1 kg =(20.58 kg.m/s2)(2.0m)
h = 2.0 m = (41.16 kg.s2) or (41.16 J)
Note: kg.s2 = J
g = 9.8 m/s2 Final answer: 41.16 J
b. Arnold throw a ball with a mass of 2.1 kg at the speed of 20.4 m/s. find the Kinetic Energy of the ball.
Given: K.E. = ? Formula: K.E.=1/2mv2 solution: K.E. 1/2(2.1kg)(20.1m/s)2
m = 2.1 kg =1/2(2.1kg)(404.02 m/s2)
v = 20.4 m/s = ½(848.42kg.m/s2)
Note: kg.m/s = J
= 424.21 kg.m/s or J
Final answer: 424.21 J
