Rules
The court is rectangular and divided into halves by a net. Courts are usually marked for
both singles and doubles play, although badminton rules permit a court to be marked for
singles only The doubles court is wider than the singles court, but both are of the same
length. The exception, which often causes confusion to newer players, is that the doubles
court has a shorter serve-length dimension.
HITS
Half-court or goal shots
In the midfield, a high flyer will normally be hit with a shot. There are also jump shots, which
allow players a greater angle to chop the shuttlecock down.
If the shuttlecock is at a lower height than the net, you can perform a push or block,
pushing it gently. In case it is at a height equal to that of the net, there is a flat shot, also
called a drive.
Defense strikes
To defend a shot, there are three possible basic options: lift, block the shuttle to make a
drop, or make a tight or drive. In singles, blocking is the most common response. On the
contrary, in doubles, lifting is the safest option although it allows opponents to continue
attacking. Blocks and tense are counter attacks, to take the initiative of the point, but that
can be intercepted by the partner of the player who has finished. Many players use the
backhand defense, whether the shuttle goes to the forehand or backhand zone, since the
backhand is more effective to return shots that are directed to the body.
The serve presents its particular variety of blows. Unlike tennis, the serve is restricted by
the rules of the game, so the shuttle must be hit below the waist. The server can choose
between a short serve, a long serve to the back, or a tight serve or a defense serve.
