SALEM, M.A.—The Salem YMCA is premiering a special Pilates class, in the new Mind and
Body Studio, designed to complement a swimmers traditional training. The course runs on
Tuesday nights from 6-8 p.m., starting September 24, 2019- October 29, 2019.
The purpose of the class is to offer an additional training course that effectively and
responsibly trains swimmers in addition to their pool routine. The pilates class is designed to use
body weight training to strengthen crucial muscles used by swimmers. The class also uses key
elements of pilates, such as postural alignment and centering, to build proper muscles and protect
the parts of the body that are often stressed through swimming.
This class will be offered exclusively at the Salem location, downtown at 1 Sewall Street.
The class costs $30 for Salem and North Shore YMCA members, and $55 for community
members. The class is part of the Salem YMCA’s new Health and Fitness department, which
focuses on wellness through group classes and alternative exercises.
This class is exclusive to the Salem location, and will be taught by Gina Grinarml. She
has over 8 years teaching experience with the YMCA, as both a fitness coach and swim
instructor. When asked about running the course, she said, “I campaigned to run this class
because both of these activities have been a hobby of mine for years, but I see a lot of my
colleagues fall short of their training goals because they don’t cross-train. This will offer a new
way for athletes to improve their fitness while protecting their body.”
