1. In 1989, Amy Tan’s novel The Joy Luck Club became a best-seller in the United States. It was
the first Asian American story to reach the general American reading public. Based on Tan’s very

Tan’s mother left China for America just before the Communists took over the country. She left

2. The Image of Motherhood
More than 140 years ago in London, 67yearold Anna McNeill Whistler agreed to act as a model
for her son, an artist James Whistler. The portrait that Whistler did __1__ his late thirties went on to

For the painting, James Whistler sat his mother in a chair. He had her put on a black dress and a

in Grey and Black, No. 1,” and Thomas Carlyle’s was “Arrangement in Grey and Black, No. 2.” If
