Dear Aunt Catherine,

I'm writing because I need your help at the moment. I'm a 17 year old student from Boston and I am finding
school very tough. I'm bullied verbally, physically and online by schoolmates. I've been beaten many times. I am
always mocked because my grades are not high compared to the others in my class; I am only good at writing.
Besides, I started writing a novel and a bully overheard me when I told a friend about it, so they started saying:
"You're too stupid to publish a book. Who would want a book written by you?" Please help me ; my self-esteem is
being destroyed. What should I do ?

Task1: Read the text below then answer question A that follow
Dear Sofia,
I'm really sorry to hear about your bullying problem, but you're much stronger than you think you are. I can't
stand bullies; they are cowards because they always hunt in packs. They are usually pathetic and insecure people
driven by jealousy. I know your situation is hard, but you should let it fuel your creativity; think about how great
it would be when you're older to send them a signed copy of your novel. Bullying is a serious problem; you must
tell your parents and your teachers at school about what's happening. These days, schools take bullying very
seriously; they don't want it affecting their reputation. The abuse you've been experiencing is very dangerous and
you mustn't keep trying to cope with it alone; other people should know so they can support you.

Developing Skills
Reading and writing
Before you read
 Observe pictures 1-4 and guess what the text is about?
Picture 1 Picture 2 Picture 3 Picture 4
As you read
Read the text carefully then do the tasks that follow
Looking for an easy science project using a few household items? There are some experiments you can
do with eggs. You can do the following experiment with a couple of friends, with your parents, or by yourself.
All what you need is some vinegar, a container and a raw egg. (§1)
The first step you start with is that you bring a container which is large enough to fit the egg and place
the raw egg carefully in it as shown in (picture 01). Next, fill the glass with white vinegar. You are not obliged
to fill it to the top but be sure that the egg is completely covered with vinegar. You can see bubbles forming on
the surface of the egg almost immediately as you can see in (picture 02). Then, leave the egg in the glass in a
safe place. This process takes from 24 to 72 hours. If you want to be in the safe side, you wait three days before
continuing. After three days, remove the egg from the vinegar and wash it carefully with some water. At this
moment, you notice that the egg’s shell disappeared (picture 03). At the end, examine the egg; you will notice
that it feels like a bouncy ball see (picture 04). (§2)
The question that you may ask is: “How did this happen?”. The answer is the following; when you left
the egg in vinegar, the acid in the vinegar broke down the calcium in the egg’s shell, producing carbon dioxide
gas through the bubbles which you saw in (picture 01). As a result, the egg’s shell dissolved. (§3)
Task 1: Write the letter that corresponds to the right answer.
The text is about:…………………………………………………………………………….
a) The different steps of an experiment.
b) An experiment about how to make a bouncy egg.
