INTRODUCTION TO PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Project Management by Nick Youngson CC BY-SA 3.0 Alpha Stock Images

The following content was prepared by Prof Robert Brookes and reproduced
from Larson, Gray (2018) Project Management: The Managerial Process.
WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO TODAY?

 What is a project and what does it mean to be a project manager?

 Review the class expectations.
 Time for some introductions!
 Short lecture that covers the material in Chapter One.
 Review your deliverables for Week Two.
WHAT IS A PROJECT MANAGER?

 Have you ever managed a project before? Were you part of a project team?
 How PM can help career?
 Do you need to be a project manager full-time to benefit from knowing project
management skills?
 Write down the job title you imagine you will have when you graduate
from this program.
PROJECT MANAGEMENT AS A DISCIPLINE AND A SKILL

How can learning project management help you in your career?

 Necessary if you want to be a Project Manager! BUT….

 What about working with other project managers (internal and external)?
 What about when you are dependent on the completion of other projects?
 What about when you are managing your own project, where the outcome will be
critical to your success?

 Regardless of your career path, being strong at project management will help you
progress.
COURSE OVERVIEW

 Each week we will (roughly) cover a chapter from the textbook.

 FanshaweOnline has a copy of the course-at-a-glance, schedule, and other expectations.
 There will be two exams that test your knowledge of the content and its application.
 You will be working in project teams to complete case studies as well as a major project.
 You will want to read the chapter for the week prior to the in-class work, since the lecture
material won’t necessarily cover the entire chapter. This will be covered in each week’s reading
assignment.
 Your online hours will consist of reviewing posted material as well as working with your
groups to complete and submit assignments.
 TEST MATERIALS: Anything covered in the lectures, readings, videos or assignments may show
up on the tests. In other words, do not rely solely on the PowerPoint slides for your revision!
