Objectives:

1. To calculate the values associated with generalized model equation

2. To calculate the values associated with generalized model equation

Experiment Outcome:

By the end of the experiment, the student will be able to:

1. Construct a simple op-amp circuit

2. Calculate the values of K, K, a, and K associated with the generalized model

3. Predict an output value when the input (Vin), V supply, and Room Temperature is given,
based on the generalized model equation

Apparatus/ Components:

Breadboard, Jumper Cables, 10k (2) and 1k (1) Resistors, Dual DC Power Supply, Function
Generator, LM 741 (Op Amp), Oscilloscope, Digital Multimeter, Air-con
Controller/Temperature reader
Safety Measures:

1. Do not work alone while working with high voltages and never leave high voltages on
when you are not present.
2. Wear suitable attire for lab work. Do not wear open toe footwear, short pants, loose or
bulky clothes, ties or jewellery.
3. Eating or drinking in the lab is strictly prohibited.
4. Make sure all high voltage connection is adequately taped or otherwise insulated to
prevent accidental contact by you or neighbouring students.
5. Take extreme care using tools that can cause short circuits if accidental contact is made to
other circuit elements.
6. Only tools with insulated handles should be used. If a person comes in contact with a
high voltage, immediately shut off power.
7. In the event of an electrical fire do not use water. The lab fire extinguishers are
specifically charged for electrical fires.
8. Switch off the power supplies after the end of experiment.
9. Clean the bench and return all apparatus to their respective places before leave the lab.
Procedures:

1. Build an inverting amplifier with feedback circuit as figure below.

2. Test the circuit under the following 2 conditions:

Condition I where the Vsupply = 15V, Room Temperature = 27⁰C

Condition II where the Vsupply = 3V, Room Temperature = 27⁰C

3. Record the readings in Table 1.0

Result:

Vin(V) 0 5 10 15 20

Vout (Condition I) 0.0 0.07 0.20 0.44 0.49

Vout (Condition II) 0.0 0.8 0.18 0.40 0.50

Table 1.0

Questions:

1. Determine the values of K , K, a, and K associated with the generalized model

equation O = (K + K I ) I + a + I.

2. Predict an output value when the input (Vin) is 8.5V, Vsupply= 3V and Room Temperature
is 25 C.

(Question 1)

Question 2
Discussion:

By completing this lab session, the students get a clearer picture about the Inverting
Operational Amplifier and temperature transducer. A temperature transducer is an electrical
device usually used in automated air-temperature control sequences. Its purpose is to take a
measurement of the air temperature and relay the information, after translated it into a readable
form to a power source for the mechanical part of the system. Once the information has been
taken by the temperature transducer and relayed, the information is sent to the unit power source.

Usually, when a transducer is telling a mechanical unit, such as a furnace or a cooling

system, that it needs to engage in order to create the desired temperature, it will also tell the unit
when it has reached that desired temperature. This signals the unit to disengage, allowing for the
efficient operation of many central airs or heating units. When the unit power source reveals the
information from the temperature transducer, it either tells the system to stand idle or engage
depending on the temperature that has been measured.

If the temperature reads lower than the setting input to the system by the user, the heating
unit is told to engage until the air is measured by the temperature transducer to be as high in
temperature as the user desires. The same principle is applied to cooling systems; however in
these cases the temperature is read to be higher than the setting input before the cooling system is
engaged. Temperature transducers send the information they collect to more sources than just the
power source for the heating or cooling unit. Digital thermostats installed in many households
and businesses utilize digital LCD screens to display the information that is read by the
temperature transducer.

The transducer measures the air temperature and translates it into information the screen
is able to display at the same time the information is being sent to the power source telling it
whether or not to engage. These transducers can also be used in a number of useful applications,
from telling an individual the outside temperature from inside the house or building, to informing
researchers at what temperature a certain chemical or physical reaction happens. The transducer
itself is basically a sensor that has the ability to transfer the information it obtains to another
medium in a form different than it was originally read. This information can be translated back to
a digital screen, without having to tell any sort of mechanical unit to actuate, disengage, or take
no action.
In this lab session, we used the LM741 amplifier was used to measure temperature. The
LM741 series are general purpose operational amplifiers. The operational amplifier can be
regarded as the basic building block for modern amplifiers. It is a high gain, integrated circuit
amplifier designed to amplify signals to many kHz. It is not normally used by itself but with
external feedback networks to produce precise transfer characteristics which depend almost
entirely on the feedback network. Basically there are two input terminals and one output
terminal, the voltage at the output terminal being proportional to the difference between the
voltages at the input terminals.

For this session we connected the LM741 as inverting amplifier that invert the output of
the signal. It consists of a resistor of 10k ohms from the input terminal to the inverting amplifier
input of the circuit, and another resistor of 1k ohms as feedback loop connected from the output
to the inverting input of the op-amp. The non-inverting input with 10k ohms is connected to
ground. The condition in this lab has been reduced to 2 condition, first the Vsupply = 15V with the
room temperature of 27⁰C and second condition where the Vsupply = 3V with room temperature
of 27⁰C.

Since it was room temperature there is not much changes we did with the surrounding
temperature. Once we hardwired the circuit with LM 741we observed and measured the
necessary value that table needed. For both condition the Vin varied from 0V to 20V with 2
different supply. The output value that we get increases gradually. All the value and result
attached in the report. Although we encountered some problems in completion of this lab session
but with the help of our lab tutor we managed to overcome it.

Conclusion:

As a conclusion, the student was able to introduce the method of calibration using simple
Operational Amplifier. Moreover, the students manage to calculate the values associated with
generalized model equation. This experiment also enhances the knowledge of the students by
understanding the temperature affect to the amplifier.
