Title: Three Points Bending of Laminated Composite

Venue: GF, Haking Wong Building

APPARATUS

1: Al alloy beam with a rectangular cross-section

2: Ti alloy beam with a rectangular cross-section
3. Laminated composite made of the same Al alloy and Ti alloy listed above.

Note 1 : The span of the beam (separation of the two supports) L as specified by the
instructor:
Al alloy: ;
Ti alloy: ;
Laminated composite: ;

Note 2: The cross-section area of the beams are rectangular:

Al alloy: d: ;b________________;
Ti alloy: d: ;b________________;
Laminated composite: d: ;b________________;

modulus, and I is the second moment of the area.

PROCEDURE

1. Measure the Young’s modulus of the Al alloy and the Ti alloy employing the three point
bending test. Note: use four different loading to obtain the average value of E.
2. Transform the rectangular cross-section of the laminated composite to an T cross-section
and calculate the second moment of area of the transformed T section.
3. Apply several different loads on the laminated composite beam and measure the
respective deflections.
4. Calculate the respective deflections of the laminated composite beam subjected to the
FL3
above three different loads. (Note:   ).
48 EI
5. Compare the calculated deflections with the measured ones.
6. Calculate the maximum stress of the Al alloy layer of the composite beam at the largest
My
load. (Note:   ).
I
7. Calculate the maximum stress of the Ti alloy layer of the composite beam at the largest
load.
