1. LECTURE

Advantages

 Lectures are the cultural norm of adult education.

 Lectures inflate the trainer's ego.

 Lectures do not require extensive preparation.

 Lectures permit efficient coverage of content in a limited time.

 Lectures can reach a large group at the same time.

 Great lecturers inspire their listeners.

Disadvantages

 Lectures fail to provide instructors with feedback about the extent of student learning.

 In lectures students are often passive because there is no mechanism to ensure that
they are intellectually engaged with the material.

2. Discussion

Advantages

 Emphasis on learning instead of teaching.

 Participation by everyone in the class.

 Development of democratic way of thinking.

 Training in reflective thinking.

 Training in self-expression.

 Spirit of tolerance is inculcated.


 Learning is made interesting.

Disadvantages

 Discussion method is not appropriate for all the topics.

 It can be used only to students who have some basic knowledge in the topic.

 Some of the students may feel shy or reluctant to take part while others may try to
domonate

 Teacher may lose control over the students and they may end up in quarrelling.

3. Questions and answer technique

Advantages

 It can be used in all teaching situations.


 It helps in developing the power of expression of the students.
 It is helpful to ascertain the personal difficulties of the students.
 It provides a check on preparation of assignments.
 It can be used to reflect student’s background and attitude.
 It is quite handy to the teacher when no other suitable teaching method is available.

Disadvantages

 It requires a lot of skill on the part of teacher to make a proper use of this method.
 It may sometime mar the atmosphere of the class.
 This method generally is quite embracing for timid students.
 It is time consuming.

4. Audio-visual Aid

Advantages

 Gets the attention of the participants.


 Easy to follow.
 Participants feel more engaged.
 Easier to explain or put things in perspective.

Disadvantages

 It is easier to lose focus.


 Requires a well-designed presentation or material.
 Participants might pay more attention to the graphics than the audio.
