PHASE TWO OF THE 3236m² KAALFONTEIN MPC TO COMMENCE

A modern, integrated, 3236m 2 multipurpose centre, which includes a much-needed

community hall, sports courts, and library, is on the cards for residents of
Kaalfontein, Ebony Park and Ivory Park, in Midrand, Region A.

The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), on behalf of the City of

Johannesburg, is set to begin phase two of the construction of the Kaalfontein
Multipurpose Centre, aimed at benefiting the community, after phase one reached
practical completion in December last year.

Once completed, the Kaalfontein Multipurpose Centre development will consist of a

new a double storey administration and office building, community hall, and sport
facilities that include a gymnasium, pool, and library, offices, hall and soccer fields.

The multipurpose centre will provide opportunities for social interaction and cater for
different sporting codes, such as soccer, basketball, swimming and more.

From a learning perspective, the facility will offer learning facilitation through an
806m², state-of-the-art library and a learning centre.

Located in the north-eastern corner of City of Johannesburg, in an area where

population growth is certain, the facility will provide a safe space that facilitates the
enhancing of fundamental skills like reading and writing, in conjunction with sport,
physical activity and health to stimulate growth and development in the community.

“The construction of the facility forms part of the City of Johannesburg’s strategy to
meet this demand for new social infrastructure and is intended to fulfill the broader
regeneration objectives, including transforming communities, skills growth,
employment creation, improvement of quality of life and affording communities
access to recreational spaces,” Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for
Community Development, Cllr Margaret Arnolds, said.

The scope of works for phase one, completed at the end of 2020, entailed the
construction of the platforms, perimeter fence, service reticulations (water,
sanitation, stormwater, electrical power) and the construction of a guardhouse.
Phase two of the project entails the construction of the main building works and is
expected to commence in the second quarter of 2021. It is projected to take up to 24
months to complete.
“The Kaalfontein area and surrounds remains an area where major backlogs are still
a reality in terms of infrastructure. This multipurpose centre, in which various social
facilities are clusters, exemplifies our key strategy in providing a basis for stimulating
growth and development in the community,” said Cllr Thapelo Amad, MMC for
Development Planning, said.

The facility will supplement the various developments that have been taking place in
Kaalfontein, including the Kaalfontein Intersection Upgrade and the recently
upgraded state-of-the-art, eco-friendly Kaalfontein Clinic.

“The Kaalfontein Multipurpose Centre is in line with the City of Johannesburg’s 2040
Growth and Development Strategy in focusing on systematically changing the
spatial landscape of the city to give citizens more equitable access, increase
economic activity and promote sustainable livelihoods,” MMC Amad concluded.
