SELBY BRT DEPOT ENTERS FINAL STRETCH

The construction of the state-of-the-art Selby Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) depot for
Phase 1B and Phase 1C operations, has entered its final stretch with the refurbishment of
an existing administration block in implementation.

The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), on behalf of the City of Johannesburg’s

Department of Transport, is busy with the construction of the Selby BRT Depot in the
industrial nodes in the inner city of Johannesburg.

The new Selby BRT Depot will further enhance the efficiency and reliability of the City’s BRT
system. The depot will service two Rea Vaya BRT operating companies for major and minor
maintenance by maintaining in-service and out-of-service buses.

The depot’s central location in the inner city will minimise dead mileage and the time lost by
buses in traffic congestion between depots and route starting points. The facility will also

have a positive environmental impact by reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas
emissions.

The Selby BRT depot will be able to accommodate up to 270 buses. The construction was
in three phases – Phase 2A and Phase 2B are complete, and Phase 2C is ongoing.

ADMINSTRATION BUILDING TO FINALISE THE DEPOT

Phase 2C of the development of the Selby BRT Depot is the working space of the facility
which is currently being refurbished and renovated to feature modern amenities. The scope
of works will see the refurbishment of workshop areas; construction of new canteen and
gymnasium.

The modern administration building will also feature of new offices, administration rooms,
boardrooms and storerooms; a new main foyer and reception areas and the refurbishment
to courtyard spaces. It will provide a central hub for managing the operations.

The construction of additional toilet blocks, new lifts to aid accessibility, and service ducts,
pedestrian and vehicular access with security offices and external works will also form part
of the scope of work.

Phase 2B; construction of the bus depot workshops, refueling garages, and phase 2C;
construction of the administration building, are complete.

The scope of works for Phase 2B included extensive alterations, refurbishments, and
additions to an existing workshop building. The extended to the construction of a new
refuelling building, a new double-volume wash bay building, two new refuse buildings, a new
gatehouse, civil works, stormwater infrastructure, concrete paving panels with layer works,
and mechanical and electrical installations.
Phase 2A, now complete, entailed the construction of the perimeter fence, bus parking area
platform, site access road, main parking area driveway upgrade and the main entrance road
into the depot (along Pat Mbatha Road intersection with Ignatius Street).

The construction of the administration building also plays a role in job creation and skills
development, with 30% of the contract value awarded to SMMEs. To date, 10 SMMEs and
51 local labourers have been employed and are receiving continuous work through the
project.

“The Selby Rea Vaya BRT Deport forms part of the JDA’s accelerated infrastructure delivery
programme aimed at effectively and efficiently delivering on the City’s priority social and
economic infrastructure,” JDA CEO Mokgema Mongane said.

“Once complete, the Selby BRT Depot will be fundamental for the Rea Vaya Phase 1C
operations to include the trunk route from Sandton to Alexandra along Rivonia Road and
Katherine Drive and the trunk route from Parktown to Alexandra along Louis Botha Avenue,”
Mongane noted.
