TWO REGIONS IN FOCUS DURING JDAs CEO REGIONAL OVERSIGHT TOUR

The Johannesburg Development Agency’s (JDA) newly appointed Chief Executive Officer
(CEO), Mokgema Mongane, has hit the ground running by conducting a CEO Regional
Oversight Tour of six JDA projects in two regions of Johannesburg.

The aim of the Regional Oversight Tour was for the CEO to engage with key stakeholders
and project managers to receive feedback and insight into implementing and executing
various capital projects and infrastructure developments.

The regional tour, which took place on Wednesday, 31 August 2022, saw the site visits of six
projects. These are the construction of the Orange Farm Public Transport facility, upgrading
of gravel roads in Ward 131, the Vlakfontein Public Transport facility, and the Jabulani Transit
Oriented Development’s (TOD) Bolani Road project, Molapo Bridge project and the Jabulani
Safehub swimming pool complex.

The first stop of the oversight tour was in Orange Farm, Region G, where the JDA is forging
ahead with the construction of the Orange Farm Public Transport Facility on behalf of the
City’s Transport Department.

Located at the corner of Link Street and Saint Road, the Orange Farm Public Transport
Facility will serve as an aesthetically pleasing, functional, sustainable, and durable facility with
greening and landscaping.

Once completed, the facility will feature covered trading facilities, ablution facilities, bicycle
racks and a refuse yard. The soft and hard landscaping comes with street furniture, a security
officer room with a mini kitchen and a boardroom for meetings with streetlighting with
perimeter lights within a suitable radius of the facility.

The second stop of the oversight tour was in Ward 131, Orange Farm, where the JDA is
undertaking the upgrading of gravel roads and associated stormwater infrastructure on behalf
of the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA).
This project forms part of the Orange Farm multi-disciplinary turnkey projects in Wards 1 to
5. The overall scope of works includes re-gravelling access roads, installation of stormwater
infrastructure, public environment upgrades and streetlights.

The City of Johannesburg has identified the Greater Orange Farm region as a priority
intervention area requiring locally specific short, medium, and long-term development
programmes and strategies based on a clearly articulated vision for a better future for this
area.

The third stop of the oversight tour saw the JDA CEO make his way to Vlakfontein, on the
outskirts of Zakariyya Park, where the JDA is implementing the construction of the Vlakfontein
Public Transport facility on behalf of the City’s Transport Department.

In the case of the Orange Farm Public Transport facility, the Vlakfontein Public Transport
facility comprises - a guard house, office buildings, ablution facilities, ranking areas,
walkways, and taxi holding areas. The external works include landscaping, stormwater
drainage, sewer and water reticulation, and boundary fences.
The fourth and final stop of the oversight tour was in Region D, Soweto in Jabulani. The JDA
has been implementing various infrastructure projects as part of the Jabulani Transit Oriented
Development (TOD) Node.

These projects are in Jabulani Phase 5, which is the upgrade of Bolani Road and related
infrastructure, and 6B. The construction of a swimming pool and associated facilities and
Phase 7, which is the construction in Molapo.

The Jabulani Node is one of the City’s signature projects for using Transit Oriented
Development (TOD) as a catalyst to accelerate socio-economic development by revitalising
a neighbourhood for residents, commuters, businesses, and visitors.

“Unlocking bottlenecks and resolving issues will be imperative to expediting the JDA’s mission
of implementing, managing and facilitating area-based developments in efficient, equitable,
sustainable and innovative ways,” JDA CEO Mokgema Mongane said.

“The regional oversight tour has been insightful in acquainting me with the JDA project, and
we will be looking at ways to ensure that projects are fast-tracked so they can be completed
and handed over to client departments,” Mongane added.
