Hands-on exercise: Using Power Quality testing

Fluke 435 II Power Quality Tester


Instrument setup
1. Ensure that the simulator is
powered “OFF” before making
any connections.
2. Reset the Fluke-435 to factory
defaults;
– Turn the 435 on by pressing the
green “ON/OFF” key
– Press the “SETUP” menu key
– Press F1 “USER PREF.”
– Press F1 for “FACTORY
DEFAULTS”
– Press F5 “CONTINUE” to confirm
reset
• Press F5 to progress through Figure 1
the setup selections
• Use the default selections
for ENGLISH, 60Hz, 120V,
“A,B,C”, US DEFAULT.

Instrument setup
1. If the Fluke-435 is not powered up
press the green power key
 The Setup screen should be
visible and if not press the
“SETUP” key. Figure 1 Figure 1

 The configuration needs to


match the simulator with
these settings. Figure 1
 If changes are required press
the “SETUP” key

 Press F4 “MANUAL SETUP” and
with the “Config:” highlighted
press the “ENTER” key
 Use the arrow keys to select “3
 Wye” selection and press the
ENTER key twice. Figure 2
 Press the down arrow key to Figure 3
highlight the current clamp
selections and press “ENTER”.

 Use the arrow keys to select
“Ratio:” then press the right
arrow key to select “100:1”.
This will provide higher current
reading for more realistic Figure 4

Instrument Setup
1. Connect the Fluke-435 to the input power of the drive system
 Using the test leads provided, make the following connections;
 “GROUND” on the 435 to “PE” on the simulator using the shorting
adapter between the PE and N
 “N” on the 435 to “N” (Neutral) on simulator through the adapter
 “A/L1 through C/L3 and N” on the 435 to “A/L1 through C/L3 and N” on
simulator
2. Using the Fluke i400TF AC Current Clamps, to make the following
connections;
 Connect the Fluke i400TF current clamps
to clamp input “A/L1 through C/L3 and N”
on the 435.
 Connect the loops around the wire loops
“A/L1 through C/L3 and N” on the 435
as shown.
 The clamps are directional and need to be
connected in the proper direction.

Simulator controls and connections

1. Power Supply input


2. Power supply switch with control lamp indication “Power on”
3. Connection points for “N” neutral, “PE” protective ground and voltage
outputs for “A/L1, B/L2, C/L3”.
4. Potentiometers to adjust the output voltage of each phase.
5. Unbalance potentiometer for shifting phase of voltage “C/L3”.
6. Current loops for 3 phases and neutral.
7. Potentiometers to adjust the current output of each phase.
– Large knobs for amplitude and small knobs for phase shift
8. Potentiometers for the 3rd harmonic current for all 3 phases.
– Lower knob for amplitude and the upper knob for phase shift on “A/L1”.

Hands-on Exercise
• Turn the simulator power ON
and press the green “ON”
switch.
• Press the SCOPE button on the
Fluke-435 to display the voltage
and current
– Press F4 to select “ZOOM”
– Press F1 to highlight “VOLT”
and/or “AMP” to “zoom in or
out”
• Use the up or down arrow keys to
adjust the amplitude on each as
needed
• Press F1 to highlight “A”
as the source
• Repeat for all phases to
assure proper
connections

Resistive vs Reactive
• Press the SCOPE button on the
Fluke-435 to display the voltage
and current
– Press F1 to highlight “C” as the
source
• Rotate the Imaginary and Real

knobs as shown in Figure 1
– Figure 2 shows a sinewave
shaped current waveform that is
in phase with the voltage.
– This represents a “Resistive”
load.
• Rotate Phase C/L1 Imaginary Figure 2
knob slowly clockwise and note
the phase shift of the current.
• Rotating Phase C/L1 Imaginary
knob in both directions allow the
current to lead or lag the voltage.
– Figure 3 shows samples of phase
shift.
– This represents “Reactive” loads.

Hands-on Exercise
Harmonics
• Adjust the Demonstrator knobs as
shown.
• Press the MENU button on the Fluke-
435 to display the measurement
menu choices.
– Press the down arrow key to
highlight “Harmonics” and press
F5 to select “OK”.
– Press F1 to select “A” amps
harmonics.
• The bar graphs of current
harmonics show how heavily
distorted the current is,
starting from the first
harmonic through the 49th
harmonic.
– Press the right arrow key to move
the “Cursor” on the screen on the
phase C 3rd harmonic bar graph as
shown. Figure 1
– Adjust the 3rd Harmonics “Gain”
knob through it’s range and note
the changes in the readings across
the top of the 435 display screen.
– Press the SCOPE button then
press F1 to highlight “C”.
– Adjust the 3rd Harmonics Phase Figure 1
Shift and Gain knob through their
ranges and note the changes in
wave shape on the 435 display
screen. Figure 2
– Pressing F5 “Back” will return to
the Harmonic’s screen, press F5
to stop running the Harmonics
test and press F1 to “DISCARD &
EXIT”.

Unbalance
• Adjust the Demonstrator knobs as
shown.
• Press the MENU button on the
Fluke-435 to display the
measurement menu choices if not
already displayed.
– Press the down arrow key to
highlight “Unbalance” and press
F5 to select “OK”.
– Press F2 to select “METER”, the
Meter mode should look like
the image. Figure 2
• The “Vneg.” and “Aneg.” readings
indicates the Voltage and Current
unbalance in %
– Adjust the Current “I” Real
knobs through their ranges and
note the changes in the “Aneg”
and “Afund” for each phase and
neutral readings on the 435
display screen.
– Adjust the Voltage “V” Gain
knobs through their range and
note the changes in the “Vneg”
and “Vfund” for each phase and
neutral readings on the 435
display screen.
– Press the SCOPE button to view Figure 1
the effects of adjusting the
Voltage “V” Gain knobs on the
waveforms. Figure 2
– Pressing F5 “Back” will return to
the Unbalance screen, press F5
to stop running the Harmonics
test and press F1 to “DISCARD &
EXIT”.

Power Factor
• Adjust the Demonstrator knobs as
shown.
• Press the MENU button on the
Fluke-435 to display the
measurement menu choices.
– Press the down arrow key to
highlight “Power & Energy” and
press F5 to select “OK”.
– Adjust the “I” current “Imaginary”
knobs through their ranges and note
the changes in the readings on the
435 display screen. Figure 1 & 2
• Note the relationship of kW versus
kVA and the effect on PF
• As current leads of lags voltage the
kvar is capacitive or inductive
– Press the SCOPE button then press
F1 to highlight “AMP”.
– Adjust the “I” current “Imaginary”
knobs through their ranges and note
the changes in waveforms on the
435 display screen. Figure 1

– Pressing F5 “Back” will return to the


Harmonics screen, press F5 to stop
running the Harmonics test and
press F1 to “DISCARD & EXIT”.

Energy Logging
• Adjust the Demonstrator knobs as
shown.
• Press the MENU button on the
Fluke-435 to display the
measurement menu choices.
– Press the down arrow key to
highlight “Power & Energy” and
press F5 to select “OK”.
– Press the down arrow key to view
kWh at the top of the screen on the
435.
– Adjust the “I” current “Real” knobs
through their ranges to adjust the
readings on the 435 display screen.
– The 435 is recording readings and
trend plotting kW, kWh, power
factor and additional parameters
over time.
• This process allows for Identifying
any peak usage times .
• Determine if usage can be adjusted
and how else to reduce cost
– Press the up/down arrow keys to
view the other parameters being
recorded.
– Press F3 to view the trend plots and
the up/down arrow keys to view the
other trend plots being recorded.
– Pressing F5 “Back” will return to the
Harmonics screen, press F5 to stop
running the Harmonics test and
press F1 to “DISCARD & EXIT”.
