To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing as a reference for Melissa Comunale. My son, Nathaniel, had the good fortune to
have Ms. Comunale as his math teacher in 4th grade during the one year she was a teacher at
his school - Green eld Elementary. It also happened to be the 2020/21 year, and my son was
fully remote. When I learned that she would be leaving Green eld due to a number of families
de-enrolling from Green eld because of the pandemic and the school losing a signi cant
amount of funding, I felt simultaneously sad for the kids who would miss out on being in her
class and grateful that my son and his classmates had her as their math teacher.

Math has always come easy to my son, but it has never been one of his favorite subjects. My
husband and I have always had to nd ways to keep him interested in math by going deeper
into subjects they were teaching at school. Fourth grade was the rst year that my son loved
math class! Although he continued to grasp new concepts easily, Ms. Comunale found ways to
challenge and engage him and the other fast-learners, while continuing to make sure the rest of
the class understood the new concepts. It may have been her rst year teaching, but she
handled remote teaching like a seasoned professional. She somehow managed to keep 75
kids of varying aptitudes engaged on Zoom and make math class fun. She was sensitive to
their social and emotional needs and gave them plenty of breaks as well as time to engage
with each other. While it is deeply disappointing for Green eld to lose such a wonderful math
teacher, I know she will be a welcome addition at whatever school is lucky enough to get her.

Please feel free to call me if you wish to discuss Ms. Comunale over the phone. I am sure my
son would be happy to share his rst hand experiences with her as well, since he always loved
singing her praises to us.

Sincerely,

Erica Intzekostas
