Description and requirements:

Introduction:

Hammers and impact wrenches are commonly used to fix the nails. They produce a high impact force in a
relatively short period of time to fix the nails.

Objective:

The objective of the project is to design and build a working model of nail fixing mechanism (Impact
Mechanism) by efficiently using either of slider-crank, gears, cam-follower mechanisms, etc. or
combination of these mechanisms.

Students are required to carefully select lengths of various links of the mechanism so that uniform motion
among various parts/links is possible (Synthesis)
Specifications and Constraints:

 Mechanism should be DC motor driven

 Overall dimensions of the mechanism must be not exceeding 30 cm × 30 cm × 30 cm
 Overall weight should not exceed 1 Kgs
 Consider economic factors in selecting materials and different parts
 Consider environmental factors in selecting materials (Recyclable materials) and manufacturing
process (Energy efficient processes)
 Safety must be ensured in the use and handling of the final product

Standards:

When standard parts (for example: nut bolts, screws, bearings, gears, nails, etc.) and materials are used
mention the relevant standard.

Design project consists of following two tasks:

Task # 1:

Submit a project design report on the design of the mechanism. The report must consist of the following
sections:

 Objective
 Design Specifications, Constraints and Standards
 Design Methodology: Design calculations (Kinematic analysis: Position, velocity and acceleration)
and dimensions (Synthesis analysis) of various links, number and types of joints, links and types of
pairs must be clearly mentioned.
 Neat and clear sketches of all parts of model.
 Include various pictures of your manufactured product.
 References must be properly written at the end of report.

Task # 2:

 You are required to manufacture a miniature model as per design calculations and constraints
 System/Design Verification: All parts should be assembled and tested. Model should be DC motor
driven. Make small video of the final working model (not more than 1 min long) and upload along
with your project report
