Written By Grade Level

Sierra Londenberg 7

Standards Mathematical Practices

HS.A-REI.B.4 - Solve quadratic equations in MP1 - Make sense of problems and

one variable. persevere in solving them.
b. Solve quadratic equations by
inspection, taking square roots, completing MP2 - Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
the square, the quadratic formula, and
factoring, as appropriate to the initial form of MP4 - Model with mathematics.
the equation. MP5 - Use appropriate tools strategically.
HS.A-SSE.B.a - Choose and produce an
equivalent form of an expression to reveal
and explain properties of the quantity
represented by the expression.
a. Factor a quadratic expression to
reveal the zeros of the function it defines.

HS.A-APR.B.b - Identify zeros of polynomials

when suitable factorizations are available,
and use the zeros to construct a rough graph
of the function defined by the polynomial.

Lesson Goals

Students will apply their knowledge of quadratic functions to application problems.

Learning Targets

I can use my knowledge of quadratic functions to solve application problems.

Resources and Materials

● Pencil
● Planner
● Worksheet

Lesson Outline
(approximately an 30 minute lesson)

● Write down homework in planners (approximately 3 min)

● Warm up (approximately 7 min)
● Application practice in CLG (approximately 20 min)

Access for All

● EL - Directions are described multiple times for students. Examples are done on the
board for students to watch and follow along with. When students are working in their
CLGs, the teacher is walking around and checking in with students. Students will be in
their CLGs to ask questions and have support from the teacher during this time.

● Special Needs - Directions are described multiple times for students. Examples are
done on the board for students to watch and follow along with. When students are
working in their CLGs, the teacher is walking around and checking in with students.
Students will be in their CLGs to ask questions and have support from the teacher
during this time.

● Low Performance - Directions are described multiple times for students. Examples
are done on the board for students to watch and follow along with. When students are
working in their CLGs, the teacher is walking around and checking in with students.
Students will be in their CLGs to ask questions and have support from the teacher
during this time.

● Advanced - Students are encouraged to find more than one way to solve each
problem or come up with application problems of their own.

Background Knowledge

Students know how to factor, graph, and find key features of quadratic functions.

Reflection

What went well?

● Student discourse was productive and on task the majority of the time.
● Students were quick to transition allowing for more time in CLG.

What would you change for the next time?

● I would try to go through the warm up a little bit quicker the next time so that students
have even more time to work together in their groups. This is something I would like to
do, however, I do feel that there was good discourse around the math during the warm
up today which was a factor in how long it took.
