1.The following information is given for a 400 kW, 800V long shunt compound generator:
Shunt field resistance =85 Ω, armature resistance including brush resistance=0.045 Ω,
commutating field winding resistance =0.012 Ω, series field resistance=0.015 Ω, diverter
resistance =0.04 Ω. When the machine is delivering full load, calculate the power generated
by the armature.

2.A 4 pole, 240 V wave connected shunt motor gives 12 kW when running at 1000 rpm and
drawing armature and field currents of 60A and 1.1 A respectively. It has 600 conductors. Its
armature resistance is 0.12 Ω. Assuming a drop of 1 volt per brush, find
i. total torque
ii. useful torque
iii. useful flux/pole
iv. rotational losses and
v. efficiency.

3.A 230V d.c. shunt motor has an armature resistance of 0.6 Ω and field resistance of 120 Ω.
At no load, the speed is 1200 rpm and the armature current 2.8A. On application of rated
load, the speed drops to 1120 rpm. Determine the line current and power input when the
motor delivers rated load.
