Nov 6th Research locations to connect with I learned how to research my topic and what ● Solano County Local Assistance
keywords to use to find fire sanctuary Center
shelters/donation centers. I needed to navigate ● St. John’s Lutheran Church
multiple websites and keep a list of potential ● Red Cross Solano County
contacts.
LNU Lightning Complex fire is the official
name of the 2020 CA wildfires.

Jan 26th Call Red Cross Solano County I learned how to leave a detailed, professional, (707) 438-7060
and informational message. I had to wait on
the line to reach the correct department. I
drafted up the paragraph I would read out so I
got my point across clearly, ahead of time.

They called me back explaining that they

could no longer partner with me because of the
restrictions on collecting donations due to
COVID-19.

Feb 3rd Call Solano County Local Assistance I got forwarded to different departments and (707) 784- 8050
Center needed to explain why I was calling, 3 “Hello, my name is Rory Marco and I am a
different times. I was placed on hold, then senior in high school and was wondering if I
given a new number to a Volunteer Center. could connect with you to donate and
The representative explained that this distribute blankets to California wildfire
Assistance center usually dealt with financial victims, because I know many of them lost
insurance, etc, and gave me the number to everything and I hope to make a difference

Street.”
Feb 3rd Called Volunteer for Non-profit Leadership I left a message for Ronda on Feb 3rd, 11 am (707) 784-3121 -011
on Texas Street and left a detailed message and told her I was sent by the Solano County “675 Texas Street
Local Assistance Center who gave me her Volunteer for non-profit leadership 6 story
direct number and extension. glass building. Across the street from the
courthouse”
I saved her number so when she called back I
would be sure to pick up.

Feb 5th Ronda from Volunteer for Non-profit Ronda called me back and I answered. We had Holly Brown
Leadership on Texas Street called me back a conversation about how most of the 2020 (916) 447-7063 -101
and gave me another referral wildfire victims had moved out of Solano hbrown@communitylink.cr.org
county and possibly connecting with my local Coordinator of Sac Regional VOAD
Emergency center, in Sacramento, would be (Voluntary Org. Activism & Disaster)
better able to get resources to displaced Feb 4th, 12:30pm
victims. She gave me the contact information Left a message
of the Sacramento representative, Holly
Brown.

Feb 5th I called Holly and did not reach her, so I I waited to hear back from Holly for a few
left a message and sent an email, but heard days and called again, but received no
nothing back response. I decided that trail of connections
was a dead-end unfortunately and decided to
look elsewhere to give my donations.

Feb 8th Called Rebekah Turnbaugh-- the Rebekah told me about 2 programs, Family (209) 988-7311
Community Outreach Coordinator at my Promise & “The Pilgrimage,” that would rebekahturnbaugh@stjohnslc.org
church, St. John’s after my mom reminded begin in 2021 through our church. She
me she was leading a homelessness explained that they both would appreciate my https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000VW0W14
program and might know where I could blanket donations, however the blankets would /ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_HX5G4MW9R
donate my blankets. go towards impacting the homeless downtown SCJJ5F61238
and not fire victims from the LNU Lightning
Complex fire of 2020, which was my intended
goal. She gave me a link for the blankets they
like to collect, for uniformity, and the contact
“Steve Ruder” who would be the one to collect
my donated blankets if I did choose to partner
with St. John’s Lutheran Church.
Feb 8th When I realized that I might need to shift Bryan May was more than happy to connect Bryan.May@caloes.ca.gov
my focus from displaced fire victims to me with Abby Browning who is in charge of
general homelessness, I was reminded of a donations for wildfires, floods, etc. She was Abby.Browning@caloes.ca.gov
family friend we have that works at the extremely kind and set up a time and day for
California Governor's Office of Emergency me to drop off the blankets!
Services.

Feb 6th Applied to Thrivent Financial 2 (hours) I applied for seed money to help fund
purchasing new blankets because of
COVID-19 and sanitary requirements. I

Feb 9th Received package with Thrivent sponsored I learned that having the right connections and
financial support and T-shirts, purchased knowledge of who is willing to sponsor
blanket materials community service projects, can really help
make a small project bigger. I was able to
receive $250 to purchase blankets to donate.

Feb 11 Went blanket shopping We purchased quality blankets for the best price
to maximize the seed money we were granted.
We wanted to get a bang for our buck, so there
was a lot of price comparing.

Feb 13 Packaged the blankets After receiving all of the prepackaged blankets
we put them in a box and sent them away!!
Abby Browning gave me an address and met up
with me to receive the materials.
Feb 19th Made hand-written cards I wanted to add some personality to the
purchased blankets by also providing a letter of
encouragement -- and thank you notes to my
contacts Bryan and Abby for helping me.
Feb 23rd Drove to drop off donations and speak with 601 Sequoia Pacific Blvd, Sacramento, CA
representative Abby Browning 95811

I realized that the hardest part about donating

often is just finding the right place to donate to.

March Complete reflection and project, present I learned that making a positive impact on the
3rd about impact. world can be as small as holding the door open
for others or donating 15 blankets to fire
victims. I had a good time with my project
because it was something I felt passionate about,
something that personally affected me, and I
was finally able to find the right channels to
donate my blankets. I know they are going to
those that need them, it is heartwarming. <3
