Assignment 1

1. Meanings of Science and Technology

 Science and technology is a topic that encompasses science, technology, and the
interactions between the two. Science is a systematic enterprise that builds and organizes
knowledge in the form of explanations and predictions about nature and the universe.
Technology is the collection of techniques, methods or processes used in the production
of goods or services or in the accomplishment of objectives, such as scientific
investigation, or any other consumer demands. Science may drive technological
development, by generating demand for new instruments to address a scientific question,
or by illustrating technical possibilities previously unconsidered. In turn, technology may
drive scientific investigation, by creating demand for technological improvements that
can only be produced through research, and by raising questions about the underlying
principles that a new technology relies on. For the majority of human history,
technological improvements were achieved by chance, trial and error, or spontaneous
inspiration. When the modern scientific enterprise matured in the Enlightenment, it
primarily concerned itself with basic questions of nature. Research and development
directed towards immediate technical application is a relatively recent occurrence, arising
with the Industrial Revolution and becoming commonplace in the 20th century.

2. Misconception of Science and Technology

 MISCONCEPTION: Science isn't important in my life.

CORRECTION: All the technologies, medical advances, and knowledge that improve
our lives everyday are partly the result of scientific research. Furthermore, the choices
you make when you vote in elections and support particular causes can influence the
course of science. Science is deeply interwoven with our everyday lives.
 MISCONCEPTION: Science and technology can solve all our problems.

CORRECTION: The feats accomplished through the application of scientific

knowledge are truly astounding. Science has helped us eradicate deadly diseases,
communicate with people all over the world, and build technologies that make our lives
easier every day. But for all scientific innovations, the costs must be carefully weighed
against the benefits. And, of course, there's no guarantee that solutions for some problems
(e.g., finding an HIV vaccine) exist — though science is likely to help us discover them if
they do exist. Furthermore, some important human concerns (e.g. some spiritual and
aesthetic questions) cannot be addressed by science at all. Science is a marvelous tool for
helping us understand the natural world, but it is not a cure-all for whatever problems we
encounter.

 MISCONCEPTION: Science is complete.

CORRECTION: Since much of what is taught in introductory science courses is

knowledge that was constructed in the 19th and 20th centuries, it's easy to think that
science is finished — that we've already discovered most of what there is to know about
the natural world. This is far from accurate. Science is an ongoing process, and there is
much more yet to learn about the world. In fact, in science, making a key discovery often
leads to many new questions ripe for investigation. Furthermore, scientists are constantly
elaborating, refining, and revising established scientific ideas based on new evidence and
perspectives.

 MISCONCEPTION: Science is a collection of facts.

CORRECTION: Because science classes sometimes revolve around dense textbooks,

it's easy to think that's all there is to science: facts in a textbook. But that's only part of the
picture. Science is a body of knowledge that one can learn about in textbooks, but it is
also a process. Science is an exciting and dynamic process for discovering how the world
works and building that knowledge into powerful and coherent frameworks.
3. Importance of Science and Technology in the Development
Development at any phase is always linked with technology and technology happens when there
is advancement in science. Hence science, technology and development are all proportional to
each other.
Development is required in every individual to every nation in all aspects and for development to
happen, science and technology go hand in hand. Basically, science is known as the study of
knowledge, which is made into a system and depends on analyzing and understanding facts.
Technology is basically the application of this scientific knowledge.
For any successful economy, particularly in today’s quest for knowledge-based economies,
science, technology and engineering are the basic requisites. If nations do not implement science
and technology, then the chances of getting themselves developed becomes minimal and thus
could be even rated as an undeveloped nation. Science and Technology is associated in all means
with modernity and it is an essential tool for rapid development.
Modernization in every aspect of life is the greatest example of the implementation of science
and technology in every nation.
With the introduction of modern gadgets in every walk of life, life has become simple and this is
possible only because of implementing science and technology together. Without having modern
equipment’s in all sectors, be it in medicines, infrastructure, aviation, electricity, information
technology or any other field, the advancement and benefits that we face today would not have
been possible.
A nation who is not able to prosper on these grounds would never be able to sustain the lives
there and may have to solely depend on other nations for the basic requirements. Such is the
influence of science and technology for the development of a nation.
