Chapter I

INTRODUCTION
The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a new strain
of coronavirus. This new virus and disease were unknown before the outbreak began in
Wuhan, China, on December 2019. On January 30, 2020, the Philippine Department of
Health reported the first case of COVID-19 in the country, a 38-year-old female Chinese
National. As days goes by, the number of cases increased, and the current number of
COVID-19 case is 314 thousand. This contagious disease had affected so many people,
as a way to break and stop the spread of the virus, many health precautionary measures
are imposed such as lockdowns and closure of establishments such as malls, offices and
schools. Many of the things that we used to do are prohibited now and we are adapting to
the new normal that we have as a sense in adhering this pandemic.
As the school year started, we have been prohibited to conduct a face-to-face
class. In apprehending this new way of stopping the virus, Our Lady of the Snows
Institute, Dumarao, Capiz ,implemented the new way of learning or distance which is
called Blended Learning. Blended Learning is a fusion of online distant learning and in-
person delivery of printed materials to the homes of the learners through the barangays
for those who don't have internet access and interactive facilities in the comfort of their
homes.
The newly introduced modality of learning may or may not be as efficient as
having the regular face-to-face class. By this study, given these challenges in teaching
and learning, we may have helped the teachers or the school itself to monitor what are the
academic behaviors and performance that students (Junior Highschool Students) towards
this new learning modality. Through this, the researcher would like to know the
relationship between the “Academic Performance and Behavior of Junior High School
students towards Blended Learning Modality”.
Possible Causes

The theory entitled Behavioral Theory, explains that humans can be trained, or
conditioned, to respond in specific ways to specific stimuli and that given the correct
stimuli, personalities and behaviors of individuals, and even entire civilizations, can be
codified and controlled.
In 1913, the behaviorist movement began when John Watson wrote an article
entitled “Psychology as the behaviorist views it”, which set out a number of underlying
assumptions regarding methodology and behavioral analysis .
Behaviorism, also known as behavioral psychology, is a theory of learning based
on the idea that all behaviors are acquired through conditioning. Conditioning occurs
through interaction with the environment. Behaviorists believe that our responses to
environmental stimuli shape our actions.
The goal of this study is to therefore describe the relationship of the observable
behavior and performance of the respondents when it comes to Blended Learning.
Therefore, in this study the relationship between the behavior and academic performance
of the respondents to the modality which is Blended Learning will be observed.
OBJECTIVES

This study entitled “Effects of Blended Learning to the Academic Performce and
Behavior of Junior Highschool Students of Our Lady of the Snows Institute. ” aims
to know the relationship between the academic behavior and performance of Junior
High School students towards Blended Learning Modality that would be presented
to Our Lady of the Snows Institute that can be used to monitor how they do things
in the given Learning Activity Sheet Online which is a part of the blended learning
modality and can be set as a piece of evaluation for the school. Specifically, this
study aims to answer the following questions:
1. What is the academic behavior of Junior High School students towards Blended
Learning Modality?
2. What is the academic performance of Junior High School students towards
Blended Learning Modality?
3. Is there a relationship between the students' academic behavior and academic
performance towards Blended Learning Modality?
This paper aims to investigate the connection of the new modality which is blended
learning to the academic performance and behavior of the Junior Highscool students of
Our Lady of the Snows Institute. There are multiple studies and cases that are able to
support and give a clear view of their relation as a dependent and independent variable
this study was conducted by data gathering such as survey and interview on selected
students ( FGD).
TIME FRAME
The researcher will construct a set of questionnaires for the respondents.
The instrument will be the researcher-made questionnaire which will be consisting of two
parts: (a) Profiling of Usage, and (b) Assessment of their Academic Behaviour and
Performance towards Blended Learning. The questionnaire will be validated by experts
and will undergo reliability testing. Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient of .70 or higher is
considered acceptable. A FGD or forum group discussion will also be conducted with the
same set of question that is on the survey to further gather different findings and
perspective of students in this new modality.
PLAN OF ACTION
To warrant valid result of the study, the researcher will subject the questionnaires to
face validation. Validity refers to how accurately the measures obtained from the research
was actually quantifying what it was designed to measure and how accurately the
measures obtained from the study sample described the reference population from which
the study sample was drawn.
The instruments will be evaluated by a panel of teachers chosen for their
expertise. The corrections, comments, and suggestions will be assimilated in the final
printing. After which, the researcher – made questionnaire will be pilot tested among
Junior High School students of Our Lady Snows Institute. After the pilot testing, the
instrument will be subjected to reliability testing to determine to alpha coefficients.
The questionnaire will be subjected to reliability test using Cronbach’s Alpha.
The researchers will reproduce 108 questionnaires and will be pilot-tested to 108
respondents among Junior High School Students. Reliability refers to the degree to which
the results obtained by a measurement and procedure can be replicated.
This study centers on the effects of the Blended Learning to the Junior
Highschool students may it be in their behavior or their academic performances. Actions
that shall be done to support the study further more:
1. Conduct of online survey that was validated using the Cronbach’s Alpha.
2. Conduct of FGD or Forum Group Discussion among selected Junior Highschool
students.

The survey justified that there is really a connection between the new modality
which is the Blended Learning Modality, it directly and indirectly affected the
academic performance and their behavior in diverse manners and ways in
which can be in a good manner or in a bad manner. It shows that the blended
learning has really change some behavior of students.
CHAPTER IV

FINDINGS

Blended learning model encourages students to learn more actively. They have
opportunity to learn on their own pace. They can prepare themselves for the course
before coming to the class and it can realize student centered learning and reflect the
value of 21 century education. The students who attended blended learning course had
higher achievement scores than those who attended traditional teaching. Who also
argued that blended learning effective for increasing students performance. Most of
those studies also found that blended learning improves the academic averages. The
aim of recent study was to determine the effect of blended learning model on
student’s achievement. The present study was not only give a concern about how to
balance the online learning and face to face learning, but also give attention to content
to be provided. Blended learning can help teachers to provide several format of
learning material. Then, it can increase student motivation and they can get new
experience on learning process Each learning topic was provided with a quiz as an
evaluation. There is a significant increment in student learning outcomes on
information and communication technology subjects after using blended learning.
School has the important rule to provide training or workshop for the teachers in
applying this model. It is suggested to give concern about how to blend professionally
between face to face and online instruction.
