PCA-Ethical Communities Worksheet

Worksheet Objectives:
1. Describe the four ethical communities
2. Apply the ethical communities to your personal case situation

Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Briefly restate your situation from Module 1 and your role.

As stated in the previous module, the situation I will be analyzing is the overhaul and

reconstruction of the mechanized lines in the outbound department. As an area supervisor for

the Home Depot, we went through changing standard practices, a complete warehouse

renovation and the expectations of providing feedback along the way. Throughout this entire

process we had to make sure to provide adequate training to all associates and find a way to

continue to push freight through the building despite the construction.

2) Describe how the ethics of the organization influenced the situation.

I can only speak for my personal experience as an area supervisor at Home Depot, but so

far I have never had any issues regarding ethics when it comes to business decisions or

personal experiences. Throughout the entire project, Home Depot always made sure safety

was the number one priority with both the construction crew and the associates. No shortcuts

were taken in regards to associate training after the project was completed. The Home Depot

has a wheel with their values represented inside. Some of the values that were demonstrated

throughout the project were taking care of our people, excellent customer service, and

1
creating shareholder value. If they did not show a genuine interest in the ethical aspect the

associates would have been disregarded throughout the construction process.

3) Recommend how you would apply one of the ethical communities for an alternative
course of action regarding your case.

An alternative course of action for this project could have been the implementation of the

factory setting. Committing to excellence and making sure the work is done in the highest

quality possible. This route would ensure that the entire project was completed with a

sense of urgency and with the final customer in mind.

During the project associates would have also been held accountable for making

sure they were maintaining a work flow that was consistent for the building. Keeping up

with the needs of the stores was just as important as the construction project itself.

Making sure the factory setting was initiated would have ensured everyone was

consistently on the same page and the project was completed in a timely manner.

4) Reflect on what you would do or not do differently given what you have learned
about ethics.

After going through this module and diving into the ethical boundaries within a company,

there is not much I would have done differently. The Home Depot has made it clear

where they stand when it comes to the satisfaction and participation of the associates.

Throughout the entire process each associate was taken care of and the entire

management team was updated periodically. In regards to ethics, the project was well

managed and each of the associates received the proper training on the new processes

adequately.
