TOPIC: GIFTS
USEFUL WORDS/ PHRASES OR IDIOMS ABOUT GIFTS
In the IELTS exams, students are required to have a wide enough vocabulary to
discuss topics at length and make meaning clear despite inappropriacies.
Therefore, helping students extend their lexical resources is necessary. Here are
some vocabularies and phrases about the topic that teachers can explain to
students and give them chances to practice, using the words and phrases in their
discussion.
Present (n): Gift or give away.
Present (v): Giving something to someone.
Culture and norm: Way of life and doings of a group of people.
Cupid: In Roman mythology, it’s believed to be the son of the
goddess of love and beauty.
Anniversary: The date on which an event takes place each year.
Silver Jubilee: 25th year anniversary.
Golden Jubilee: 50th year anniversary.
Donation: Something that is given to a charity, mostly money.
Contribution: A gift or a payment to a common fund.
Alms: Money or food given to poor people or the needy.
Charity: An organization set up to provide help and raise money
for the needy.
Inheritance: The term used to describe property passed on to an
individual after the owner dies.
Wrapping: A paper or soft material used to cover or enclose
something.
Gift bag: A bag containing gift(s)
Ribbon: A long, narrow strip of fabric, used for tying something
or for decoration.
Cherish: To protect and care for something or someone lovingly.
Diamond:
Appreciative: To feel or show gratitude or pleasure for something.
PART I:
Students answer questions about themselves related to the topic:
1. What is gifting?
2. What major occasions are gifts given and received?
3. What is the most valuable gift ever presented to you? When?
4. Have you ever given out a gift to someone?
5. What is the most common kind of gifts in your country?

PART II:
Students will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. They have
one minute to think about what they are going to say. They can make some
notes to help them if they wish
Describe how gifting is done in a popular occasion in your country.
You should say:

What the gift is

What occasion it’s done

The significance of the gifts in the event

PART III
Students have a longer discussion on the topic. The examiner will ask them
further questions connected to the topic in part 2.

country? Why?
3. How can the tradition of gifting be improved in your country?
4. Gifts presentation can help to foster very good relationship and peace
