Written Report

This SBA was incited by our teacher introducing the necessity of this report towards success

at our CSEC examinations. Our group settled at the theme of prostitution due to the ubiquity and

ease of gathering information.

Therefore, we decided to discuss the following as sub-topics:

 The History of prostitution

 The Social and Interpersonal effects of prostitution

 Prevalence of Prostitution in Modern Society

 Prostitution and the law in Guyana

 The Pros and Cons of legalizing prostitution in Guyana

For the Written report, the group chose to write about the first three artefacts discovered and

mentioned in group discussions. The three chosen are:

1. “Sex work decriminalization” by Akola Thompson (2020)

2. “The surprising reason why prostitution is illegal” by Lissette Padilla (2015)

3. “Negative effects of prostitution on society” by Jared Justice (2019)

Firstly, the piece “Sex work decriminalization”, discusses the ‘Summary Jurisdiction

Offences Act’ of the Guyanese Constitution; where any form of prostitution is criminalized.

This, according to Thompson, “leaves the general public unable to accurately differentiate

between sex workers and victims of Human trafficking, who may engage in forced sexual

activities”[ CITATION Ako20 \l 1033 ]

Similarly, the article “The surprising reason why prostitution is illegal” expounds on

prostitution in the legal landscape, albeit in past scenarios. For instance, Padilla justifies the

criminalizing of the profession by France in World War II. Positing that “After the brothels fell
under Nazi control, prostitutes were dragged in the streets by angry mobs. Hence, the French

leaders had closed all brothels”[ CITATION Lis15 \l 1033 ]

Lastly, the article “Negative effects of prostitution on society” alludes to the effect of

prostitution on the safety of communities. To quote our source, “60% of women in legal

prostitution were physically assaulted, 70% were threatened with physical assault, and 40%

were coerced into legal prostitution” [ CITATION Jar19 \l 1033 ], painting prostitution as dangerous.
