Place de la bastille is a square in Paris where the bastille

prison stood until 14 July 1789.

It was originally a castle built in the late 14th century at
the Porte Saint-Antoine. It was 24 meters high and
surrounded by 8 round towers. It was used as a prison
for subjects who did not agree with the French king
politically. The July column which now stands in place
de la bastille commemorates the July revolution of
1830.
