Chemistry Lab Experiment on Marker Solubility

A chromatography experiment was conducted to determine which marker was used to write graffiti on a whiteboard. Samples from the graffiti and each confiscated marker were run on chromatography paper with water as the solvent. The Rf values of each spot were measured and compared. The marker with an Rf value matching the graffiti sample was determined to be the marker used.

  • Experiment Overview: Introduces the experiment, describing the background, hypothesis, and the goal of determining marker solubility.
  • Materials and Methodology: Details the materials used and the step-by-step method conducted in the experiment.
  • Results and Discussion: Discusses variables, expected results, and presents a table comparing chromatograms.

Background:

A marker was used to write graffiti on the whiteboard. The students were questioned but all
denied doing it. The teacher confiscated all the markers. An experiment to determine which
marker was used was carried out.

Hypothesis:

The marker with a similar solubility to the traces on the board is the same marker that made the
stain.

Aim:

To determine which marker was used to write graffiti on the board

Materials:

 Markers
 Chromatography paper
 Water
 Stopwatch
 Ruler

Method:

1. Obtain traces of the marker from the board and place it onto a piece of chromatography paper
2. Lightly dip the end of the paper into some water and allow the water to run up the paper for 15
minutes
3. Measure and record the Rf value of the chromatogram.
4. Next, repeat this process for the confiscated markers for 15 minutes, labelling them each
respectively (1,2,3...)
5. Record the two chromatograms of similar solubility as the same marker

Controlled Variable

 Time taken (15 minutes)

Manipulative variable

 Marker used (different markers were used)

Responsive variable

 Rf value

Expected results

It is expected that the traces of marker from the board will be similar in solubility to one of the
confiscated markers. Indicating that they are the same due to similar Rf values.

Treatment of Results:

Marker Chromatogram
Traces form board Rf = 0.14
1 Rf = 0.8
2 Rf = 0.64
3 Rf = 0.14

Table comparing the various chromatograms

Limitations

 Large quantities of each marker cannot be applied onto the paper

Precautions

 Used a stopwatch to accurately record time
