Challenges-

Signs of challenges-

Internal- physical and emotional feelings

E.g- feeling anxious – Emotional

Feeling confused- emotional

External- can be a social indicator or signs that alert us to risk.

E.g- sweaty hands- Physical

Being a passenger where driver is speeding – Social indicator

Example of challenges-

 Changing schools
 Applying for work
 Moving out of home

Employment-

Different types of employment include-

Part time work

 Offers set hours per week


 Includes sick pay and holiday pay
 Reliable source of regular income

Casual work

 Flexible hours with a higher pay


 Lack of benefits (sick pay)

Contract work

 Pays a set amount of money for completing a task

Self employment

 Setting up your own business


 Earn well if your successful
 Work long hours
Volunteer work

 Free in exchange for developing skills and knowledge of the work field

Tax file number-

In order to work you must have a tax file number (TFN). To do this you will need to-

 Complete the online application form from the ATO


 Then you will need to make an appointment at Australia Post Retail Outlet and attend the
interview (within 30 days of completing online form)
 Print summary of your application which includes your reference number and take it to your
Australian Post interview and proof of your identity
 You will need to sign the application of Australia Post upon completion of interview

If you can not go to Australia Post store, submit by mail. Applications can take up to 28 days to be
processed.

Resume-

 Honest, easy to read, impressive summary of you


 Important record of your personal details, employment history, education, skills, interests
and achievements.

Personal details-

 Your full name, contact details and date of birth. This is how you will be contacted for an
interview.

Education-

 Include the highest level of school education achieved so far

Employment-

 All job experience, including school work, holiday work and part time jobs should be briefly
outlined
 Include period of employment and tasks involved.

Skills-

 Outline any special skills you have


 Also include any special qualifications, awards and indicate the year achieved.

Interests-

 A brief sentence about how you like to spend your free time, this gives an idea of the person
you are.

Referees-

 People who speak highly of you to the prospective employer


 Include referees name and phone number
Medicare-

 Australian publicly funded health care system


 All Australian citizens are entitled to Medicare
 Includes free health services
 Must be 15 years old and over

Writing cover letters-

This briefly outlines why you would be suitable for the job. You must sell yourself, outlining your
positive qualities and any relevant experience. Attach this to your resume

Job interview skills-

If your resume was accepted then you will be asked to come in for an interview

Before the interview

 Check time and location


 Well dressed
 Have some background knowledge about the company

At the interview

 Listen carefully to the questions asked an respond in a positive manner


 Know your resume well
 Don’t use bad language

After the interview

 If you find out you were unsuccessful ask for feedback on your application or interview
 This feedback will allow you to improve and reinforce behaviour
 If you were successful, ensure you understand when you are expected to start the job and
whether you need to make any preparations prior to starting

Completing a tax return-

It is required by law that you complete a tax return if you earned an income during a financial
income (July – June 30).

Coping with challenges-

 Many situations cause stress


 People will respond to this differently
 Some example of coping with stress are
 Journaling, listening to music, taking a walk
 Know where to find support
 Manage your time effectively
 Develop an action plan and set goals
 Engage in positive self talk
 Recognise what you value most
 Accept that life is full of challenges
 Trust- your thoughts and feelings
 Talk- to a trusted adult or somebody in a support network
 Take control- develop and follow your own plan

Coping with grief and loss-

The way we react loss can depend on one or more of the following factors

 Our personality: coping style and ability to respond to it


 Support networks available to us
 The type of loss occurred
 Previous experiences with loss

Five stages of grief


 Denial- overwhelming state of shock and denied such a situation has happened
 Anger- the pain we feel leads to anger
 Bargaining-we want life to be the way it was so we try to make changes to get rid of the pain
 Depression- when we realise and accept our loss we feel upset and withdrawn
 Acceptance- our emotions become more stable as we accept life is different to how it was
and learn to live with our loss.

Resilience-
The ability to bounce back after a setback.

Self monitoring-

The ability to observe and adjust ones behaviour in a social setting

High self monitoring skills-

 Being able to control their emotions


 Think before they speak
 Being receptive to others opinions
 Confidence

Low self monitoring skills-

 Failing to recognise mistakes


 Aggressive when responding to situations they do not agree with
 Bring uncompromising

Self regulation-

Self regulation is linked to self monitoring skills but rather than being about emotional response, its
more about the things that someone does to prevent poor self management. This helps people be
more resilient. Some strategies include

 Set goals
 Develop plan to tackle goals
 Reflect
 Adapt to change
 Have good self awareness
 Cheer yourself up
 Monitor individual process
 Know your strengths and weaknesses
 Think about the consequences of your actions.
