WRITING EXERCISE
COMPILED BY ISMA NURULLOH/1N/20197479036

DIRECTION:

a. Read very carefully the outline and sample text of cause/effect essay (appendix 1).
b. After reading the essay, answer the following questions:
1. Does the essay follow the outline properly? Explain your answer.
Answer : Yes, it does, the essay follow the outline, the essay uses chain
organization, it is clearly stated in the outline (that the economic growth isn’t good
causes the weakened rupiah exchange rate, the weak rupiah exchange rate causes
the grocery becomes expensive and it causes the company bankruptcy), even
though there are some transition signals missed in the essay. In my opinion,
transition signals are important to use especially in chain organization, in chain
style the relationship between cause and the next effect will be more obviously
seen if the transition signals appeared.
2. What is the title of the essay?
Answer: the title is The Effect of Corona Virus Outbreak in Indonesia
3. How many paragraphs does it have?
It has 4 paragraphs, I introductory Paragraph, 2 body paragraphs, and 1
concluding paragraph
4. Write the thesis statement of the essay.
Answer: the thesis statement is the corona virus is a reason for many negative
effects which occur of the national economy weaken and education levels at this
time.

5. How many body paragraphs does it have? The topics are as follow:

Body paragraph 2 : The Government’s policy of eliminating National Exam

6. How does the writer support her thesis statement? (by giving facts, statistic,
research studies, examples, logical analysis, observation, experience, expert
opinion, or anecdote, etc)
The writer supports his topics by giving the fact of the effect of the topics in each
body paragraph. There are also some quotation of expert opinion supporting the
topics.
7. What technique used in concluding paragraph? (a summary of the main point,
paraphrasing thesis statement, giving suggestion/recommendation, giving
prediction, etc)
The writer firstly paraphrases (recalls) the thesis statement, after that he gives the
recommendation and suggestion in the end.
8. What are transitional signals used on the essay?
Cause and effect transition signals used are as a result, so, therefore
The writer also uses other transition signals to make the connection between
sentence and paragraph coherence and cohesive such as but, besides, in
conclusion
9. In your opinion, what is the best part of this essay?
The best part of this essay is the body paragraph, because it combines more than
one technique to support the topic, therefore this will be personally beneficial for

me to follow the same style In composing paragraph, commonly the body

paragraph only uses one technique in supporting the topic – expert opinion and
then conclusion or fact and the conclusion, opinion and then conclusion- but for
this essay I found that the body paragraph is enriched by more than one technique.
10. If any, what part of this essay that need to be improved?
1. The use of transition signals between minor effect to another
2. There are some grammatical errors
3. The margin of the essay (I will further explain it in scoring rubric)
4. The technique of quoting source (honestly I don’t know and I’m not sure
about the proper way of quoting expert opinion from website)

c. Score the essay using the Scoring Rubric (appendix 2) and give your comments to the
writer.
Score : 88/100
Comments :
1. For the format of the essay, it should be double spaced, but the other things are
good
2. For the mechanic there is a misspelled word in paragraph 3 (coference, it should
be conference)
3. For the content, overall is good. Although the transition signals used in the minor
effects doesn’t appear, so that it makes the reader hard to analyse the link of one
effect to another.
4. For the organization, this is the best thing of the essay, the essay is well-organized
the technique used in presenting cause and effect is awesome, but I don’t give
maximum point because there is still lack of transition signals as I told in the
previous explanation (comment 3 and the answer for the question no. 1)
5. There are some grammatical errors appeared in the essay, such as (…..But the
increase can be increased if able to inhibit economic growth… I think there
should be subject and be before the word ‘able to’). And then, (This makes the
grocery so expensive and become one of causes many companies being bankrupt.
I think it should be becomes). And then, (So the government takes various ways
for minimize interactions between individuals. It is whether to minimize or for
minimizing)
