Question 1: PLO CLO LL

Marks: 15 12 1 A1

A. Describe the types of audience recognized by writers to do successful technical

writing. (450-500 words) (10 marks).
Answer:
The types of audience recognized by writers to do successful technical writing
are given as:
 High Tech Audience
 Low Tech Audience
 Lay Audience
 Multiple Audience
 Multicultural Audience
 High Tech Audience:
High Tech Audience is a type of audience usually involves the person that is expert in the
field in which you are taking part or you are doing your work in any Corporation, company
or department. The person will be your colleague as he/she will have same expertise in that
field, you have. For Example, If you are an Electrical Engineer at WAPDA and another
Electrical Engineer is also working on same project at WAPDA is your High tech Peer.
 Low Tech Audience:
Low Tech Audiences involve the persons that are familiar with your working technology
and process but are not expert in that field at your company or any organization. This
includes the subordinates and sometimes your boss also. For Example, If You are an
Engineer at any private organization then your colleagues such as accountants and directors
are your low-tech audience. They do not know much about your work but know the process
of working as they are working in your department.
 Lay Audience:
Lay Audience involves the persons that don’t know anything about your area of expertise.
This includes the customers and clients who neither work for you nor know anything about
your work. For Example, If you are selling A smartphone to a person who don’t know
anything about it. The Buyer is Lay Audience for you as he/she do not know your working
procedures.

 Multiple Audience:
Multiple Audience involves not only one audience at a time but it involves many type of
audiences such as High tech audience, low tech audience and lay audience also. For example, If
you write a letter in your company to your colleague (High tech peer), you think you sent only to
him/her but if he/she sent it to supervisor and then to the other subordinate (Low Tech Audience)
and from there, it goes to your customer (Lay Audience). This involves Multiple Audience.
 Multicultural Audience:
Multicultural Audience Involves the Audience of different cultures having different traditions
and languages. This means writing a technical report, we should keep it in mind also that to
which part of country, you are witting any report. Some people use English as a second
language. So we should keep it in mind that while sending a product, language of report for that
product should be according to that area or country. In some countries, different signs mean
different process such as Red mark in America is denoted for blood but in all over the world, it is
used as a symbol for peace. That is why, while sending any product report to That country, we
should keep in mind.
B. Describe the importance of audience recognition in different types of technical
writing (letter, reports, manuals etc.). (250-300 words) (5 marks)
Answer:
Importance of Audience Recognition:
Audience Recognition is very important for writing any technical report or in technical
writing (Letter, reports, manuals etc.). After knowing the Level of audience, we can get more
feasibility of explaining the process. On the basis of level of audience, we can explain the
importance:
High Tech audience: If you know that the audience is high tech audience then in technical
writing, we can use acronyms, abbreviations and jorgan etc to communicate. The most
important thing is that u need not to explain the lengthy terms. Only use the short terms to
explain anything. For Example, if you are writing a letter to you high tech colleague about
the dealing of project. Then you will simply tell him the whole process using phrases and
technical terms such as TDD can be used instead of telecommunication device for the deaf.
In this way, you can save your time as well as other’s also. Your accent of language and
many other terms will be more concise for them.
Low tech Audience: In case of low-tech audience, you know that audience know the process
but not the actual phenomenon. So, You will avoid to use any acronym because there are
chances of not getting that acronym by the audience. That’s why, you can miss the mark in
technical writing. For example, you are writing an instruction manual for a Device like DMM
(Digital Multimeter). You can not write only DMM as the audient might not get it. So, you
have to explain it as “Digital Multi-meter”.
Lay Audience: In this case, you have known the audience such as any customer for the
product and you worked on the disinfection of water and you are writing a report for the
customer. For Example, water is disinfected by use of DBP’s (Disinfection by products). You
can not write it only. You have to explain it as disinfection by using products like methane,
ethane etc.
