Question 1: A certain light-emitting diode (LED) is centered at the origin with its surface in the xy plane. At far
distances, the LED appears as a point, but the glowing surface geometry produces a far-field radiation pattern that
follows a raised cosine law: that is, the optical power (flux) density in watts/m2 is given in spherical coordinates by
𝐶𝑜𝑠 𝜃
𝑃 =𝑃 𝑎 𝑊
2𝜋𝑟 𝑚
where θ is the angle measured with respect to the direction that is normal to the LED surface (in this case, the z
axis), and r is the radial distance from the origin at which the power is detected.
(a) In terms of P0, find the total power in Watts emitted by the LED;
(b) Find the cone angle, θ1, within which half the total power is radiated, i.e. within the range 0 < θ < θ1;
(c) An optical detector, having a 1-cm2 cross-sectional area, is positioned along +z-axis 1m away, such that
it faces the LED. If 1µW is measured by the detector, what (to a very good estimate) is the value of P0?

Question 2:
(a) Two uniform line charges, 8 nC/m each, are located at x = 2, z = 1, and at x = −2, y = 2 in free space. If
the potential at the origin is 100 V, find V at P (4,1,3).
(b) The surface y = 0 separates two perfect dielectrics. For y > 0, let εr1 = 3, while εr2 = 5 where y < 0. If
E1 = 80ax − 60ay − 30az V/m, Compute:
(i) EN1; (ii) ET1; (iii) the angle θ1 between E1 and a normal to the surface;
(iv) EN2; (v) ET2 (vi) the angle θ2 between E2 and a normal to the surface.

Question 3: A parallel-plate capacitor with a separation 𝑑 = 1.0 𝑐𝑚 has 29 𝑘𝑉 applied when free space is the only
dielectric. If air has a dielectric strength of 𝑅𝑒𝑔. # 𝐾𝑉/𝑐𝑚, show why the air breaks down (if it does) when a thin
piece of glass (𝜖 = 6.5) with a dielectric strength of 290 𝑘𝑉/𝑐𝑚 and thickness 𝑑 = 0.2 𝑐𝑚 is inserted as shown
in Figure. Explain the outcome of your work. (8, 2)

Question 4:

A. A circular conductor of radius 𝑟 = 1 𝑐𝑚 has an internal field

𝑯= 𝑠𝑖𝑛 𝑎𝑟 − 𝑐𝑜𝑠 𝑎𝑟 𝒂𝝓 A/m
Where 𝑎 = 𝜋/2𝑟 . Find the total current in the conductor by applying 𝑱 = 𝛁 × 𝑯. (5)

B. A circular loop lies in 𝑧 = 0 plane, has a radius of 0.1 𝑚 and a resistance of 𝑅𝑒𝑔. # Ω. Given 𝑩 =
0.2 𝑠𝑖𝑛10 𝑡 𝒂𝒛 (T). Compute current induced in the circuit. (5)

Question 5: The electric field intensity in the region 0 < 𝑥 < 5, 0 < 𝑦 < 𝜋/12, 0 < 𝑧 < 0.06 𝑚 in free
space is given by 𝑬 = 𝐴 𝑐𝑜𝑠 (6𝑦)𝑠𝑖𝑛 (𝑎𝑧)𝑐𝑜𝑠 (2 × 10 𝑡) 𝒂𝒙 𝑉/𝑚. Compute the value of 𝑎 if it is known that
𝑎 is non zero.
(10)
Hint: Begin with the 𝜵 × 𝑬 relationship.
