SETTING OF BATTERBOARDS

What is batter board

- Batter board are temporary frames, set beyond the corners of a planned foundation at precise
elevations. These batter boards are then used to hold layout lines (construction twine) to indicate
the limits (edges and corners) of the foundation.
- Batter boards are the horizontal boards placed at the corner and at the sides of the projected
building when final layout takes place. The reference for the foundation is marked on these boards.
Two Types of Batter Boards
 Batter boards for foundation posts may be either joined by continuous pieces surrounding the site
of foundation or by individual piece for each foundation.

 Batter boards for the foundation walls are either single or double batter boards which are placed
at corner.
Construction of batter boards
 Considering the standards in constructing a batter board, a 1x3 or 1x4 or similar lumber is used
make three or four pointed stakes that are long-enough to drive into the soil securely and that will
be tall enough that you can level your string lines over the ground.

Materials for batter board construction

- Plumb bob
- Line/ string
- Hammer
- Pegs
- Compass
- Type Measure
- Level
- Nails
- Compass
- Square
- Stakes
- Board
- Water level

1. Claw hammer is used for driving and pulling out nails.

2. Water hose level is used to determine the horizontal levelness of a particular object.

3. Bar Level is a tool used to test the horizontal levelness of the sufaces of material. It is framed
in aluminum or wood.

4. Plumb bob is a cone shaped metal suspended on a string used to check the verticalness of a
particular object.
5. Nylon string is used to indicate the sides of the building.

6. Steel square is a L-shaped with one arm forming a perfect right angle to the other. It used to check
the squareness of a corner.

7. Ripping/Wrecking bar is used to pull out long nails. This may be straight or gooseneck. It has
a nail slot for pulling out spikes and wedging apart nailed boards.

8. Pull-push rule is used for laying out measurements. This is a flexible strip of metal provided
with the scale of the English and Metric Systems of measurements. It is rolled in a case.

9. Try square is used like the steel square but in small work

10. Cross cut saw is used for cutting lumber across the grain of wood.
11. Bolo is used to cut pegs for stake-out.

12. Sledge hammer is used to drive pegs for stake-out

13. Lumber is a sliced piece of wood.

Staking procedures

 Determine the height of the foundation at any of the four corners of the proposed building,
preferably where the grade stake is.

 In this corner, drive a stake as a high as the desired height of the foundation.

 Drive in set of posts for the batter boards 3 or more feet away from the corners and along the
sides. Drive in the posts firmly. Align these posts with a string.

 Move the height of the foundation from the stakes to the corner post of the batter board. This is
done by stretching a string, leveled with plumb level from the stake to the post. vMove the height
of the foundation from the stakes to the corner post of the batter board. This is done by stretching
a string, leveled with plumb level from the stake to the post.

 From the mark of this post, stretch out a string going around the corners of the building and passing at
the side of the batter board posts.
 Level this string with a plumb level. Stretch the string tight. Start leveling from the corner where the
height of the foundation is established. Recheck the levelness.

 Mark batter board posts along the line just leveled. These marks are places for the top of the batter boards.
 Nail the batter boards in place, the straight side up and at the marks of the posts.

Setting up of batter boards

Step 1: determine the height of the foundation at any four corners of the proposed building,
preferably where the grade stake is.

Step 2: in this corner, drive a stake as a high as the desired height of the foundation.

Step 3: Drive in set of posts fir the batter boards 3 more feet away from the corners and along
the sides. Drive in this posts firmly. Align these posts with string

Step 4: Move the height of the foundation from the stakes to the corner post of the batter board.
This is done by stretching a string, levelled with plumb level from the stake to the post.

Step 5: from the mark of this post, stretch out a string going around the corners of the building
and passing at the side of the batter boards posts.

Step 6: level this string with a plumb level. Stretch the string tight. Start levelling from the
corner where the height of the foundation is established. Recheck the levelness.

Step 7: mark batter board posts along the line just levelled.
Marks are places for the top of the batter boards.

Step 8: Nail the batter boards in place, the straight side up and at the marks of this posts.
How to level the batter boards

A commercially made "spirit level" is the easiest levelling device to use. Place it on the surface - in this
case the top edge of the batter board - and keep adjusting the height of the board at the opposite end
until the bubble is in the center.

When joining boards at stakes, place the level over the seam of the board to maintain a continuous level
line.

An additional check on level can be made at the corners: use an extra board to provide a surface for the
level.

Another method is to use a water level: this is a clear plastic hose that is filled with water, Adjust the
first end of the hose to a known level mark. When the other end of the hose is placed at the next stake,
the water inside will be at the same level as at the first end. To prevent spillage the ends may be
plugged until the hose is in position, But all plugs must be removed to get an accurate measurement.
