ANSWER

1. What is a lathe.

[2 marks]

ANSWER:

Lathe is a machine tool that rotates a workpiece about an axis of rotation to perform
operations such as cutting, sanding, knurling, drilling, deformation, facing, and turning,
with tools that are applied to the workpiece to create an object with symmetry about that
axis.

2. What are the different accessories and attachments used on a lathe.

[4 marks]

ANSWER:

ACCESSORIES:

1) FACEPLATE

Faceplate normaly used for holding the irregular shape of the workpieces.

2) STEADY REST

Steady Rest usually used for supporting long cylindrical jobs during machining to avoid the
bending or deflection of the workpiece.

3) CHUCK

Chuck is used to hold the workpiece, when the machining operation is taking place. The
workpiece is fixed in the chuck and is under rotory motion where as the tool is stationary and
by changing the angle of the tool, various lathe operations can be performed like
turning,facing,taper turning,step turning and others.

ATTACHMENT:

4) Gear cutting attachment

The gear cutting attachment will cut the bevel gear and spur gear. The external keyway
cutting, linear indexing, slotting and all regular works can be done by the use of this Gear
cutting attachment.

5) Taper Turning attachment

The tapered bar of the lathe machine can be set with different angles to the spindle axis.A
link connects sliding block to cross slide where the sliding block is carried by the guide bar
during taper turning operation.
3. Define of mandrel.

[2 marks]

ANSWER:

A flanged, tapered or threaded bar that grips a workpiece to be machined in a lathe or a

spindle or an axle used to secure or support material being machined.

4. List FOUR (4) types of lathe machines.

[4 marks]

ANSWER:

1) Speed Lathe.
2) Engine Lathe.
3) Automatic Lathe.
4) Tool-Room Lathe.

5. Name TWO (2) important parts of a lathe machine and explain their function.

[8 marks]

ANSWER:

1) The lead screw

The lead screw used to move the carriage automatically during threading.Lead screw in the
lathe is used to advance the carriage of the lathe in time with the rotation of the spindle. It is
used to make threads by having different gearing between the spindle and the drive for the
lead screw.

2) The Headstock.

The main function of headstock is to transmit power to the different parts of a lathe. It found
on the end of the bed.Once clamped to the end,the headstock provides the rotational power
for the lathe operations. It contains the bearings used by the lathe to rotate the workpiece
against the tool bit.
6. State FOUR (4) types of manufacturing lathe machine and their functions.

[8 marks]

ANSWER:

1) Capstan and Turret Lathe Machine.

This machine can be used for high volume production and for large jobs. The head of the
machine tool is a hexagonal head, which can be rotated to change the operation without
manual change,including turning,end face,boring and reaming.

2) Automatic Lathe Machine.

The automatic lathe machine can perform work automatically and can be used for mass
production. The automatic machine will automatically change without having to change the
tool manually. The advantage is that an operator can handle the operation of multiple
machines at the same time. The automatic lathe is a high-speed and heavy-duty machine.

3) Speed Lathe Machine.

The high-speed lathe can be also be called a wood lathe, which can be operated at high
speed and is operated manually. The speed range for high-speed lathes is approximately
1200 to 3600 RPM.This lathe is used for the rotation, centering, polishing and machining of
wood.

4) Engine Lathe Machine.

This is a type of lathe that is currently widely used and can perform operations such as
turning, end face, grooving, knurling and threading. The feed mechanism of the engine lathe
can operate the cutting tool in both longitudinal and lateral directions.

7. List THREE (3) methods of holding the work piece in a lathe machine.

[6 marks]

ANSWER:

1) Using a Faceplate.

Faceplate is a circular metal plate which fixes to the end of the lathe spindle. The workpiece
is then clamped to the faceplate, typically using t-nuts in slots in the faceplate,or less
commonly threaded holes in the faceplace itself.

2) Using a Mandrel such as Plain Mandrel,Expanding Mandrel,Gang Mandrel and

Stub Mandrel.

Mandrel holds internally machined workpiece between centers so further machining

operations are concentric with bore.

3) Three-jaw Universal Chuck

Three-jaw chuck can holds round and hexagonal workpiece. It more to work quickly and
accurately.Three jaws move simultaneously when adjusted by chuck key.
8. List FOUR (4) shapes of tool bit and their functions.

[8 marks]

ANSWER:

1) Turning tool

Turning tools are designed for removing the materials from the stock,a rough turning tool is
used to remove the maximum amount of material and the finishing turning tool is serve for
good surface quality, just remove a small amount,to make the piece more accurate.

2) Boring bar

A Boring Bar is required when you want to make an existed hole bigger,a boring bar can
easily bore into the hole that is already drilled, and widen its diameter. It can enlarge the hole
quickly and process it in the proper size to fit other components easily.

3) Knurling tool

Knurling tools are used to produce knurled lathe parts, through creating or pressing a pattern
onto a round section, used as a grip for handle , also usually created on fasteners like nuts. A
knurling tool is designed with a specific pattern.

4) Facing tool

A facing tool is used for facing operation on the lathe to cut flat surface perpendicular to the
piece’s rotational axis, the tool is mounted into the tool holder that rest on the carriage of the
lathe, during the process, the facing tool will feed perpendiculary across the rotational axis of
the part.

9. State TWO (2) different between three jaw chuck and four jaw chuck in lathe machine.

[8 marks]

ANSWER:

1) Construction and Motion

Three-jaw chuck refers to self-centering chuck, its jaws are interconnected via scroll gear and
move at the same time, while jaws on four-jaw chucks move independently and require
operators to center the workpiece.

2) Accuracy

Three-jaw chuck with an accuracy level of around 0.010 and the accuracy level of four-jaw
chuck is between 0 and 0.001.

3) Number of Holes for Chuck key.

The three-jaw chuck has only one hole for the chuck wrench or chuck key to tighten or
release the gripping, but a four-jaw chuck has four holes for controlling each jaw at a time.
