Submission

All manuscripts are submitted and reviewed via the journal’s

ScholarOne page. New authors should create an account prior to
submitting a manuscript for consideration. Questions about
submitting to the journal should be sent to the Executive Editor-in-
Chief, Constance Senior (constancelynn.senior@chnenergy.com.cn).

Peer Review

https://academic.oup.com/ce/pages/General_Instructions 2/11
1/3/2021 General_Instructions | Clean Energy | Oxford Academic

All submissions to the journal are rst reviewed by an editor. At this

stage manuscripts may be rejected without peer review if it is felt that
they are not of high enough quality or not relevant to the journal.
This fast rejection process means that authors are given a quick
decision and do not need to wait for the review process. Manuscripts
that are not instantly rejected are sent out for peer review, to at least
two independent reviewers. Based on the feedback from these
reviewers and the Editors’ judgment a decision is given on the
manuscript. The average time from submission to rst decision is 6
weeks.

If a paper is not acceptable in its original form, we will pass on

suggestions for revisions to the author.

In the case of manuscripts in which one of the authors is a member of

the editorial sta of the journal, that editor will be blinded from
reviewing or making decisions on the manuscript, and this will be
acknowledged in the con ict of interest statement of the published
paper.

Language Editing Pre-Submission

Language editing, particularly if English is not your rst language,

can be used to ensure that the academic content of your paper is fully
understood by the journal editors and reviewers. Please note that
edited manuscripts will still need to undergo peer-review by the
journal.

Ethics

Authors should observe high standards with respect to publication

ethics as set out by the Commission on Publication Ethics (COPE).
Falsi cation or fabrication of data, plagiarism, including duplicate
publication of the authors’ own work without proper citation, and
misappropriation of the work are all unacceptable practices. Any
cases of ethical misconduct are treated very seriously and will be
dealt with in accordance with the COPE guidelines.

Third-party copyright

In order to reproduce any third-party material, including tables,

gures, or images, in an article authors must obtain permission from
the copyright holder and be compliant with any requirements the
copyright holder may have pertaining to this reuse. When seeking to
reproduce any kind of third- party material authors should request
the following: non-exclusive rights to reproduce the material in the
speci ed article and journal;

print and electronic rights, preferably for use in any form or

medium;

the right to use the material for the life of the work; and

world-wide English-language rights.

It is particularly important to clear permission for use in both the

print and online versions of the journal, and we are not able to accept
permissions which carry a time limit because we retain journal
articles as part of our online journal archive.

Further guidelines on clearing permissions can be found here.

Conflict of interest

Oxford University Press requires declaration of any con ict of

interest upon submission online. If the manuscript is published,
con ict of interest information will be communicated in a statement
in the published paper.

Open Access

Clean Energy is a fully open access journal, and all articles are
published in the journal under an open access licence immediately
upon publication. Clean Energy does not currently charge for open
access.

If the corresponding author is based in one of the countries included

in our Developing Countries Initiative, your article will be eligible for
a full waiver of the open access charge.

OUP has a growing number of Read and Publish agreements with

institutions and consortia which provide funding for open access
publishing. This means authors from participating institutions can
publish open access, and the institution may pay the charge. Find out
if your institution is participating

Data Policy

The journal encourages all authors, where ethically possible, to

publicly release all data underlying any published paper.

Crosscheck

The Clean Energy editorial team reserves the right to use CrossCheck.
CrossCheck is an initiative started by CrossRef to help its members
actively engage in e orts to prevent scholarly and professional
plagiarism. By submitting your manuscript to the journal, it is
understood that this it is an original manuscript and is unpublished
work and is not under consideration elsewhere. Plagiarism, including
duplicate publication of the author’s own work, in whole or in part
without proper citation is not tolerated by the journal.

Preparation of manuscript

Please ensure that your manuscript is in Word doc, docx or LaTeX

format and not a PDF. Upon revision, please provide the main
manuscript as a Word doc or docx.

Format

i. Clean Energy is a double-blind journal. Please upload an

anonymous main document without author names, emails,
addresses or acknowledgements. Then upload a separate title page

https://academic.oup.com/ce/pages/General_Instructions 5/11
1/3/2021 General_Instructions | Clean Energy | Oxford Academic

with author names, emails, addresses and acknowledgements. If

there are multiple corresponding authors then nominate only one
for communication with the editorial o ce.

ii. We suggest a maximum length of 250 words for the Abstract.

Avoid reference citations and abbreviations in the Abstract.

iii. Tables and gures should be accompanied by a legend. Please use

a common image format for gures. The initial submission can have
gures and text in one le, rather than separate les if desired.
Figures should be submitted as separate, high-resolution (300 to
600 DPI) les in either .jpg or .tif format. Tables should be provided
in an editable format and can be included in the main document, or
provided as a separate le. They should not be in image format.

iv. Videos can be published in the online article, with a still image of
the video appearing in the print version. Please submit videos in
MP4 format. Any supplementary videos that you do not want to be
included in the article itself can be uploaded as supplementary data.
All videos should have an accompanying legend.

v. References should be provided in number order as endnotes, with

in-text cues in square brackets, for example [1]. Include a minimum
of three authors followed by et al. Authors are responsible for the
accuracy of their references. Examples of the referencing format for
journal articles, books and online sources can be found below. For
other reference types, refer to published articles in the journal.

1. Xu M, Yan R, Zheng C, et al. Status of trace element emission in

a coal combustion process: a review. Fuel Processing Technology,
2003, 85:215-237.

2. Reid RC, Prausnitz JM, Poling BE. The Properties of Gases and
Liquids. 4th edn. New York: McGraw-Hill, 1987.

3. Energinet. Security of Electricity Supply Report.

https://en.energinet.dk/ About-our-reports/Reports/Security-
of-Electricity-Supply-Report-2017 (8 February 2018, date last
accessed).

vi. Details of funding sources should be included at the end of the

text. Please refer to your funding organizations to acknowledge their
support. PubMed Central links will require a speci c grant number
to be referenced.

https://academic.oup.com/ce/pages/General_Instructions 6/11
1/3/2021 General_Instructions | Clean Energy | Oxford Academic

vii. Please list all author contributions upon submission of the

manuscript. These should be listed on the title page rather than in
the main document.

viii. Please de ne non-standard abbreviations at the rst occurrence

and number gures and tables consecutively.

Graphical Abstract and teaser text

Clean Energy uses graphical abstract and teaser text to promote

articles via email content, social media, newsletters and online search
results. Authors are encouraged to submit a graphical abstract as part
of the article, in addition to the text abstract.

Graphical abstract
Graphical abstract is a single image that summarises the focus and
main ndings of the article. It could be the key ‘results’ image from
the paper itself, or a specially designed gure that captures the key
takeaway message of the paper and enables the viewer to understand
what the paper is about.  It does not have to replicate all the
information in the text abstract, or be a comprehensive account of
the paper.

Abstract can also take video or audio form, provided that they also
convey the key message or nding of the paper.  On the article page,
abstract content will be displayed in the following sequence in line:
text, graphical, video, audio.

As part of the article, the graphical abstract will be displayed on both

article page and PDF. For examples of how this is displayed on the
article page, please visit here.

Teaser text
Teaser text is a non-technical summary stating the novelty of the
article, is displayed on the Table of Contents page (TOC) and search
results, under the article title. See the example.

https://academic.oup.com/ce/pages/General_Instructions 7/11
1/3/2021 General_Instructions | Clean Energy | Oxford Academic

The language in the teaser text used should be understood by a non-

specialist. Please ensure you use the third person, not rst person (i.e.
do not use 'I' or 'we').

Teaser text is an online only element, will not be included in the

article content.

How do the graphical abstract and teaser text display

on the TOC?
On the TOC, a thumbnail image of graphical abstract will display
under the article title, sits next to the teaser text. See the example. If
no teaser text is supplied, the TOC will display an excerpt of the
article.

When should the author submit the graphical abstracts

and teaser text?
Authors are encouraged to provide graphical abstract as a separate
le when submitting to the journal. Graphical Abstracts should be
submitted as separate high-resolution (300 to 600 DPI) les in either
.jpg or .tif format. Teaser text should be provided to the editor after
acceptance.

For articles without graphical abstract and teaser text, the editors
may contact the authors for this content after acceptance.

The graphical abstract le should be clearly named, e.g.

graphical_abstract.ti . See this page for guidance on appropriate le
format and resolution for graphics. Please ensure graphical abstracts
are in landscape format.

Please check that your graphical abstracts are clear and eye-catching.
This will help to attract readers to your publication.

Figures and illustration

Please provide gures in one of the following le formats: raster

images can be provided in .tif and .jpeg; vector images can be

https://academic.oup.com/ce/pages/General_Instructions 8/11
1/3/2021 General_Instructions | Clean Energy | Oxford Academic

provided in .eps format. Figures should have a resolution of 300 - 600

DPI. They can be included in the main document at initial submission,
but upon revision they must be provided as a separate le(s).

Supplementary data

Submit all material to be considered as Supplementary Data online at

the same time as the main manuscript. Ensure that the
supplementary material is referred to in the main manuscript at an
appropriate point in the text. Supplementary material will be
available online only and will not be copyedited, so ensure that it is
clearly and succinctly presented, and that the style conforms with the
rest of the paper. Also ensure that the presentation will work on any
Internet browser. It is not recommended for the les to be more than
2 MB each, although exceptions can be made at the editorial o ce's
discretion. Please ensure that any gures included in the
supplementary material are high resolution, as these will be
published online as they are received.

Please do not include abbreviations lists. Please ensure that each

abbreviation used in the manuscript text is expanded upon rst
mention. The only instance in which an abbreviations list can be
permitted is in the case of symbols or abbreviations used in
equations. If your paper contains equations and/or uses symbols, a
Nomenclature section can be inserted before the Reference section.

Proofs

Authors will receive a link to the PDF proof of their manuscript on our
online system by email, and it is essential that a current email
address is supplied with all manuscripts. Proo ng instructions will
accompany the PDF le but the proof should be checked immediately
upon receipt and uploaded in accordance with covering instructions.
Only essential corrections should be made at the proof stage.
