Model
Define apostrophes, and go over why and how they are used
Write out sentences using possession and explaining the type, following with
contractions

Guided Practice
- Flip through words with apostrophe flash cards and students identify
possession or the omitted words
- Pull a name from the stick jar to have the students name different parts of
the graph when asked
- Show both incorrect and correct uses of apostrophes and have students
identify why

Independent Practice
- Students will be given a worksheet about identifying apostrophes.
- Students will be assigned a book from the teacher library and must
identify the uses of apostrophes and possessions they find.

Check for Understanding

Formative assessment as a class
Example scenario: Student A will be given the word you’re, student B will have
the word you & C will have the word are (multiple students will be participating
at the same time). Student A will have to find the two words that make up their
word and stay with student B & C until the teacher says “freeze”. This will be
done as a class and every student will have a chance to be Student A.

Closure
Students will be in assigned groups and we will end with examples of words
with apostrophes. Students will then be assigned 3 “apostrophe words” and 1
“possesion word”, they must then with their group create 3 sentences with
those words while bringing out the Noise-O-Meter App on the smart board.

Differentiation
High: Challenge students to create their own short story while using 5 words
that require an apostrophe
Low: Show the student the word with apostrophe and work on together what
else it sounds like and then check for understanding
Special Needs: iPad apostrophe app during independent practice. Headphones
will be in and the student will clearly hear the words and have multiple choices
to choose omitted words and contracted words.
