I. OPERATION
The Combination Tool is normally RIH with the ball valve in the open position and the circulation ports closed (fig.
1). The ball valve is designed to hold pressure from either direction. Both ball valve and circulation sleeve are
controlled by rupture disks. One disk, located above the circulation ports, controls the circulation function. Another
disk located on the lower end of the tool operates the ball valve which controls flow from above or below the tool. A
third disk located between the circulation ports and ball valve returns each to their original positions when it is burst.

Figure-1
The FBCT can be configured in different ways. Usually the first disk is set to rupture at the lowest pressure to close
the ball valve. The second disk is set to rupture at least 500 psi above the initial pressure and this will move the
circulation sleeve downward to open the ports to allow fluid flow between the annulus and tubing sides of the valve.
The third disk is set to rupture at a minimum of 500 psi above the second disk and its purpose is to reclose the
circulation ports as well as reopen the ball valve. The FBCT would then be in its original configuration.

II. TYPICAL APPLICATIONS

III. OPERATIONAL CONSIDERATIONS

1) Care must be exercised in selecting rupture disks to match pressures based on expected well conditions.
The disks should have at least 500 psi pressure spacing between them.

2) Consider other tools run in the DST string when planning the applied pressure to rupture the disks.

IV. ASSEMBLY PRACTICES

For new tools ensure all manufacturing remnants such as chips or other debris are removed.

All seals and seal surfaces must be lubricated with appropriate grease before assembly.

Never force threaded components together. For long mandrels or housings relieve the weight from the opposite end
when threading to mating part to reduce galling.

Take extra precaution when handling parts with seal surfaces to not scratch or dent the surface.

Do not use brushes to apply grease that shed bristles.

Do not hammer directly on components. Use a brass bar or wooden block.

V. ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS
1) Vise on Crossover Adapter (1).

2) Install O-rings (23) and Backup rings (24) on Crossover Sub.

3) Thread Ported Adapter (2) onto Crossover Sub.

4) Install O-rings (27) and Backup rings (28) on Ported Adapter.

5) Thread Seal Adapter (3) onto Ported Adapter.

6) Install O-rings (27) and Backup rings (28) on Seal Adapter.

7) Install O-rings (25,29, 31) and Backup rings (26, 30, 32) on Inner Mandrel (4).

8) Install Lock Ring (6) in the groove on Inner Sleeve. Apply silicon oil to lubricate OD of sleeve.

9) Slide Inner Mandrel into lower end of Seal Adapter. A rubber hammer will be useful to move the Mandrel
up to engage the Seal Adapter.

10) Slide Outer Housing (5) over Inner Mandrel and thread onto Seal Adapter.

11) Install O-rings (27) and Backup rings (28) on both ends of Tandem Nipple (7).

22) Install Valve Bearings (13) in Ball Operator.

23) Apply silicon oil to Ball Seat (11), inside Ball Operator, and around the Valve Bearings.

24) Place Ball Valve (12) in Ball Operator. Roll Ball Valve back against the upper Ball Seat (11).

NOTE: the Ball Valve should be open in this position when the Upper Piston is in the position
shown on assembly drawing.

25) Apply silicon oil to lubricate both Upper and Lower Pistons.

26) Install O-rings (38), Backup rings (39), and Wear Strips (44) in Valve Housing.

27) Slide Valve Housing (8) over Ball Valve assembly and thread it onto Tandem Nipple (7).

28) The Ball Valve will close during makeup of the Valve Housing. Thread the Puller into the holes provided in
the Lower Piston (16). Pull downward to latch the valve in the open position.

29) Install O-rings (27) and Backup rings (28) on End Adapter (18).

36) Thread Crossover Nipple (19) into End Adapter.

Assembly has progressed enough to function test tool. Assembly will be resumed after successful testing.

VI. FUNCTION TESTING

NOTE: the following procedure is predicated on having the ball valve in the open position and
circulation sleeve in the closed position after assembly.

Port adapter: 00760610 is required to connect a pressure line to the rupture disk ports for testing.

37) Connect a pressure line to the rupture disk port in Ported Adapter (2). Do not plug the other ports.

38) Apply approximately 700 psi to shift Inner Mandrel to the open position. Bleed pressure and disconnect
pressure line.

39) Connect pressure line to the rupture disk port in End Adapter (18). Do not plug the other ports.

40) Apply approximately 700 psi to rotate the Ball Valve to the closed position. Inspect ID of tool to ensure
valve has rotated closed. Bleed pressure and disconnect pressure line.

41) Connect pressure line to the rupture disk port in Tandem Nipple (7). Again, do not plug the other ports.

42) Apply approximately 700 psi to shift Inner Mandrel back to the closed position and the Ball Valve back to
the open position. Inspect ID of tool to ensure ball valve has been fully opened. Bleed all pressure and
disconnect lines.

Pressure testing is complete. Assembly can be continued.

VII. ASSEMBLY CONTINUED

43) Break connection between Outer Housing (5) and Tandem Nipple (7). Drain fluid from ID of tool.

NOTE: if fluid is not drained the moving components will hydraulically lock causing a
malfunction. Applying short blasts of compressed air to the rupture disk port in the Tandem
Sub will help to evacuate fluid from the ball valve section.

44) Reconnect Outer Housing and Tandem Nipple.

45) Install an O-ring (22) on each Rupture Disk (21).

46) Thread Rupture Disks into Rupture Disk Adapters (20).

47) Install O-rings (22) in the underside of Rupture Disk Adapters.

48) Thread Rupture Disk Adapters into Ported Adapter (2), Tandem Nipple (7), and End Adapter (18).
Record rupture disk pressure ratings.

NOTE: the rupture disk in the End Adapter should normally activate first, then the disk in the
Ported Adapter and finally the disk in the Tandem Nipple.

Final assembly is now completed.

VIII. DISASSEMBLY
1) Disassemble in the reverse order of assembly.

2) Replace seals, backup rings, and rupture disks after each run.

3) Inspect Xylan parts and recoat as necessary.
