A Different Olympics
Everyone knows about the Olympic Games. But have you heard of the
Paralympics? The Paralympics are for athletes with physical problems. The
Paralympics were started by a British doctor and are held every four years, in the
DIDACTIC UNIT 7 21
same year and at the same place as the Olympic Games. The first Paralympics
were in Rome in 1960, with only 400 athletes. Since then, the number of athletes
keeps growing and in 2004 in Athens, there were almost 4,000 athletes.
If you watch the next Paralympics, you will see amazing people. Some athletes
can’t walk, but they play an incredible game of rugby or basketball. Some athletes
can’t see, but they can ride a bicycle or swim faster than you can imagine. In fact,
many Paralympic records aren’t very different from the Olympic ones. These
athletes will show the world that they can do almost any sport and play almost any
game.
