DIDACTIC UNIT 7 11
How is this for a job? You hang around the shops, talk to teenagers and

you can do as a cool hunter.

The cool hunter’s job is to discover what’s hot and what’s not. Cool

hunters often work for market research companies. These companies

sell the information to clothes and shoe manufacturers, cosmetics

companies, electronic companies and even film studios.

Kate Reynolds works for a market research company in London. When we

met her, she was standing outside a popular shop, checking out a group

of teenagers. “Those teenagers look cool”, she said. “I am going to

interview them”.

So what is she going to ask? “Well”, Kate explains, “I am going to ask the

girls about the mini-skirts they are wearing and I am going to ask the

boys about those strange gloves. Then I am going to ask what are they

going to buy today, what they are going to do at the weekend. What CD

they are going to buy next and so on”.

And then what? “After that, I am going to write a report for my

company”, she explains. “Designers and manufacturers are going to use

the information for developing new products”. Now that’s cool!
