A. separating different types of garbage
B. disposing of trash properly
Alex: By not using too much water when we wash dishes, take a bath, and
when we do other things, like watering the plants outside.
Alex: When drinking or eating something outside, you should keep the garbage
until you find a trashcan to put it in because littering makes our planet dirty. Do
you like seeing trash all over the ground?
DIDACTIC UNIT 15 19
Alex: Yes. We shouldn't waste paper because trees are being cut down to
make the paper. By recycling paper, we save the forests where animals live.
Alex: Well, for example, when I was in kindergarten, I used to save the
newspapers so that I could things make out of them, like paper trees, instead of
just throwing them away. Now, the children in our neighborhood collect
newspapers once a month to take them to a recycling center.
5. Think about how paper and other products are being overused at
your home, school, or business, and propose ideas on how to reduce
excess waste and promote recycling. Exchange your ideas with the
class. Then write a paragraph exposing your ideas.

SESSION EXAM

RECYCLING
Most families produce about one ton of waste or rubbish every year.
The amount of rubbish is increasing for a number of reasons:
DIDACTIC UNIT 15 21
• development of new packaging materials
• increasing reliance on fast food and ready-made products
• increasing consumption of manufactured products
• population increase
We divide rubbish into two groups: organic and inorganic
waste. Organic waste includes food, eggshells, cotton,
paper and cardboard. This waste comes from living things
and decomposes and disappears quickly.
Inorganic waste includes glass, metal, artificial textiles, plastic
and batteries. These materials do not decompose and remain in
the environment for hundreds or even thousands of years. We
can recycle some of these materials.
Today, governments around the world are promoting recycling to help reduce the amount of rubbish
we produce. In many neighbourhoods, there are recycling bins for recyclable rubbish. There are
containers for paper and cardboard, and bottle-banks for glass. Batteries need special recycling bins
because they contain mercury and pollute the environment.
