Reduction
Chamber

With the Ripple Chamber, Suction Pressure

a lower flow rate is required
to pre-compress the low
pressure piston, so the
Rotation
pressure ripple is less.

Hydraulic Pump/Motor Division

P2/ P3 Design

The Ripple Chamber design

reduces the output flow
pulsation by up to 50%
compared with common
designs on the market.

This feature comes with

no additional cost and can
be more effective than a
separate silencer or
similar devices.

Hydraulic Pump/Motor Division

P3 Pump

Because of it’s unique

integral impeller , the
P3 Piston Pump’s self
priming speed rating
is between 10-20%
higher than
conventional pumps.
This is accomplished
in the same package
size as the
conventional style P2
Pumps .

Hydraulic Pump/Motor Division

P3 - Barrel and Cover

The P3 integral impeller,

attached to the rotating
barrel, develops a
pressure boost of 7-14 psi
to the inlet port This
supercharge pressure is
also an advantage for
hydraulic systems used
in high elevation
applications , eliminating
the need for inlet
pressure boost pumps or
pressurized reservoirs.

Hydraulic Pump/Motor Division

High Self Priming Speed

The P3 speed ratings far exceed the

competitive ratings at 0 psig inlet.

P2/P3 Installation

A difficulty in many mobile

applications is mounting
pumps on multiple pump
drives.

The P2/P3 was designed to

address this problem by
making the pump envelope
a narrow package.

o Load Sense Control
™ Load sense control will adjust output flow to maintain
a constant pressure drop across an orifice
o Pressure Compensator
™ The pressure compensator control will limit pump
outlet pressure to a predetermined level and adjust
pump outlet flow to the level needed to maintain the
set pressure.
o Remote Pressure Compensator
™ Same as the pressure compensator , except that the
adjustment is done with a remotely located relief valve
instead of at the pump control.
o Torque Limiter Control

Hydraulic Pump/Motor Division

P2/P3 Load Sense Control
Good things to Know
• Standard Load Sense Delta P setting is 300 psi.
• Standby Pressure is the pressure level the pump will maintain with no load
sense signal. This is typically 10-20 psi higher than the Load Sense Delta P
setting
• Higher LS spring setting = faster response,
but lower system efficiency
• The load sense bleed option (LB) will vent the load sense signal to allow the
pump to go to low pressure standby when there is no flow demand. This
function is typically and best accomplished in the load sense system valve,
but if the system valve does not have this feature, it can be ordered in the
pump. The disadvantage of having the bleed in the pump is that there is a
continuous loss of this bleed flow through the pump control even when the
pump is operating normal.
• Rule of Thumb : Volume of Load sense line should beat least 10% or greater
of the volume of the outlet line to the point of the load sense signal.
• With Torque Control , it’s good to use the “copy “ port for the load sense
signal, because it provides extra flow needed for the torque control.

P2/3-075 Converting to Load Sense Bleed Option
P2/3-105

P2 pumps with LA load sense control can be converted to LB

control (load sense with bleed off ) by replacing a M6 solid plug
with a M6 , 0.4 mm orifice plug as shown below.

Remote Compensator

Remote compensator
allows control of pump
from a remote location.
With addition of a 2
way valve the pump
can be forced into a
low pressure
(differential spring)
stand-by condition.
Less noisy (by 1/3), no
heat from case drain,
power savings

P2/P3 Remote Pressure Control

Good things to Know

• Standard Remote Compensator Differential Spring setting is 300 psi.

This pressure is additive to the setting of the remote relief valve.
• Standby Pressure is the pressure level the pump will maintain with
the remote signal line vented to tank. This is typically 10-20 psi
higher than the differential setting.
• The remote control pilot flow is about 1 GPM.
• The “ PA” pressure compensator control can be converted to a “RA”
remote control by removing the plug in the “X” Port and connecting
that port to a remote relief valve.

Torque Limiter Control

• The torque limiter control will vary pump displacement so that a

desired maximum input torque level to the pump is maintained.
Typically this desired torque level is the maximum torque available
for the hydraulic functions on a machine…the intent is to have the
pump controlled to use the input power available most efficiently…
when high force is needed the pump will provide high pressure;
when high speed is needed the pump will provide high flow.

Cartridge

Hydraulic Pump/Motor Division

Torque Limiter Control
• The Torque Limiter Control is achieved by the addition of a special
cartridge relief valve that controls the maximum pressure in the load
sense port . The torque control cartridge relief valve setting is a
function of the pump displacement . Since Torque is directly related
to pressure and displacement , this valve acts as a torque limiter.

Hydraulic Pump/Motor Division

Torque Limiter Control

Good things to Know

• The “TA” torque control is really three controls in one because it also
has a load sense control and a pressure limiter control function
included.

• The pump will be controlled in the load sense mode at flow &
pressure conditions below the torque setting . Once the input torque
setting is reached , the pump will be controlled by the torque control.

• The maximum pump pressure is controlled by the pressure limiter.

Hydraulic Pump/Motor Division

Torque Limiter Control
• The Torque Control relief valve spring tension is adjusted by the
position of the link piston, which is connected to the swashplate. As
the pump destrokes , the spring tension is increased and the load
sense pressure is allowed to go to a higher level before the torque
control opens.

Converting to a Torque Control Pump

P2 pumps with LA control can be converted to TA control (20-60%

range) by removing the plug in the housing , adding a orifice plug in
the X port and adding torque control cartridge to port in housing.

Add Orifice Plug to X Port

Add Torque Control Cartridge

Remove Plug 226 x56 to

open passage from load
sense control to torque
control

Note : This conversion can

only be done when
converting to the 20-60%
torque range, because the
pumps with LA control are
shipped with the 20-60%
link piston.

Installation Requirements

Hydraulic Pump/Motor Division

Installation Requirements

Pressure at Inlet port: Operating viscosity range:

Rated (absolute in bar) …….. 1 Recommended viscosity range (cSt): 15 – 40
Minimum (absolute in bar)….. 0,8 Maximum viscosity (short periods) (cSt): 1000
Maximum (absolute in bar)…. 1,2 Minimum viscosity (short periods) (cSt): 10

Case drain pressure: Minimum speed

Maximum continuous (bar) ….. 0,5? Minimum recommended speed: 600 rpm
Maximum intermittent (bar) …. 2 ??

Operating temperature:
Normal working fluid temperature in tank: 0° C – +70° C
Max. operating case drain temperature: +90° C
Cold starts temperature: -40° C

Fluid recommendation
Proper fluid conditions are essential for long and satisfactory life of hydraulic components and systems.
Hydraulic fluid must have the correct balance of cleanliness, materials and additives for protection against
wear of components, elevated viscosity and inclusion of air. For correct selection of the fluid it is assumed
that the operating temperature in the tank is known. The fluid should be selected so that, within the
operating temperature range, the operating viscosity lies within the optimum viscosity range.

Hydraulic Pump/Motor Division

Installation Requirements

Installation and mounting

Mounting altitude can be either horizontal or vertical, using the appropriate case drain port to ensure that
the case remains full of fluid at all times.

Direction of shaft rotation, viewed from the prime mover end, must be as indicated in the model code or at
the pump.

Direct coaxial drive through a flexible coupling is recommended.

Start-up procedure
Make sure the reservoir and circuit is clean and free of dirt/ debris prior to tilling with hydraulic fluid.

Fill the reservoir with filtered oil and fill to a level sufficient enough to prevent vortexing at the suction
connection to pump inlet. It is good practice to clean the system by flushing and filtering, using an external
slave pump. Before the pump is started, fill the case through the uppermost drain port with hydraulic fluid
of the type to be used. The case drain line must be connected directly to the reservoir and must terminate
below the lowest oil level.
