Teaching During Covid

In our small country school, we seem to be out of the loop sometimes with the real world.

Starting my 2nd year in the class room during the fall of 2019, I never imagined what would

happen just a few short months later. I had mostly Juniors and senior in my class room this year

and they would joke about this virus that was caused by a bat. They would make jokes about it

and how it was taking over the different countries. Little did we know how much this virus

would turn our worlds upside down.

As a busy aide in our school I wear many hats. I am the yearbook advisor, the Beta club

sponsor and the dual credit facilitator. It nothing to see me running around looking like a crazy

person. In February of 2020 I took my beta students to compete at the state Beta convention

where we would take away several awards letting us advance to nationals held in June. Everyone

was so excited as this was the 2nd year in a role that since I had taken over the club we would

advance. As a yearbook advisor we were all the time taking pictures of all sporting events and

different activates around the school. We had to make sure that we would have enough pictures

to place in the yearbook for the school year. The school district offers dual credit classes for the

upperclassman. I am in charge of making sure that all the students have what the need books

wise and I contact their professors if needed and try to make sure they are doing what they need

to be doing.

March 2020 was upon us, yay for a much-needed spring break little did we know that the

last time we would be together would be the Friday before spring break. News that the virus had

made its way to the United States had been going around. Then we received news that we were

going to extend spring break another week then another week. This is when our little school

made big changes to adapted to the new way of life. We were in contact with PJC the whole

time on how we were going to get these students on tract and finish out the year. I came to the

school and loaded up all the college books and made deliveries to all the students to make sure

that they were able to have what they need to be able to be successful to finish out the year. I

contacted each student once a week to make sure that everything was going smoothly and was

available during school hours for when they needed help. Now on to the yearbook what was I

going to do we had to cancel sporting events, prom and so much more. We were able to make

what we had work and completed the yearbook. As for my beta students’ nationals had to be

canceled they offed to do a virtual event but we choose to not participate as we were not allowed

on campus al a group. As the new year started many changes had to take place, mask was

mandatory no water fountains keeping your distance but we have made it work. I have learned so

much this past year and how to be able react to the circumstance you are handed in order to help

your students. I am planning on finishing my associate’s degree in Education then moving on to

get my bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice so I can teach it as a CTE course.
