Reflection
We are living in a harsh world were we can see abuses in environment, humans and in animals.
That is why I choose Pawssion Project to because they educate people to care for animals and
also help animals. Although I am not an animal lover but when I saw a dog or cat in our streets
having bruises and wound, I’m always pitiful about their condition but I couldn’t help. But now
that I discover Pawssion Project I can now help them. Animals are just like us, we all need to be
cared and protect because they also do have emotions, so we should equally treat them.

.
Introduction

Animal abuse. The phrase likely sends shivers down your spine. Who wants to see an animal
abused by a human being? That’s why we have animal rescue initiatives.

Unfortunately, some people don’t mind abusing animals when it serves their purposes. The good
news is that you can help fight animal cruelty by understanding what it means and how you can
help.

This is a tough topic to digest, but people who stand up against animal abuse send a strong
message. Let’s talk about animal abuse and animal rescue, what they look like, and how you can
help.

Cruelty to animals/Animal Abuse, also called animal abuse, animal neglect or animal cruelty, is
the infliction by omission (neglect) or by commission by humans of suffering or harm upon any
non-human animal. More narrowly, it can be the causing of harm or suffering for specific
achievement, such as killing animals for entertainment; cruelty to animals sometimes
encompasses inflicting harm or suffering as an end in itself, defined as zoosadism.

Who abuses animals?

Cruelty and neglect cross all social and economic boundaries and media reports suggest that
animal abuse is common in both rural and urban areas.

 Intentional cruelty to animals is strongly correlated with other crimes, including violence
against people.

 Hoarding behavior often victimizes animals. Sufferers of a hoarding disorder may impose
severe neglect on animals by housing far more than they are able to adequately take care
of. Serious animal neglect (such as hoarding) is often an indicator of people in need of
social or mental health services.

 Surveys suggest that those who intentionally abuse animals are predominantly men under
30, while those involved in animal hoarding are more likely to be women over 60.

Most common victims

The animals whose abuse is most often reported are dogs, cats, horses and  livestock. Undercover
investigations have revealed that animal abuse abounds in the factory farm industry. But because
of the weak protections afforded to livestock under state cruelty laws, only the most shocking
cases are reported, and few are ever prosecuted.

What Is Animal Rescue?

Animal rescue is a broad term that refers to any effort to save animals from cruelty and abuse. An
animal rescue operation, whether law enforcement or civilian, identifies animal cruelty, recovers
animals from substandard conditions, and makes every effort to give those animals better lives.
Most municipalities, for instance, have animal control units that answer calls about animal
cruelty. They investigate perpetrators and help place animals in new homes. Civilian animal
rescue operations accept abused, neglected, malnourished, or abandoned animals.

Pawssion Project

50 dogs on death row. To be executed by gunshot. What would you do?

One brave woman refused to just stand by, and that is how Pawssion Project was born. Founded
in October 2018 by Malou Perez, Pawssion Project is a non-profit organization dedicated to the
rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of dogs in distress. Pawssion Project began in Bacolod,
armed simply with a lot of hope, courage and the unwavering support of a few good friends. After
that first pound rescue, numerous reports poured in one after another, which eventually led to the
opening of a second shelter in Bulacan in mid 2019. Since then, the journey has led Pawssion
Project to more than 500 rescues, and thankfully over 100 rehomed dogs.

However, the problem is far greater than what Pawssion Project and other animal welfare
organizations alone can surmount. Dogs continue to be executed in city pounds, and the number
of strays and neglected pets are rising dramatically. But we believe that we can all do
something to help improve animal welfare in our country. Do not close your eyes to animal
cruelty, help spread awareness that there is a law against it (RA8485). Be a responsible pet owner
and encourage others to do the same. Promote neutering of pets to help control overpopulation.
Adopt, foster, sponsor, volunteer, donate or advocate. Every little action counts.
All Lives Matter: A Conversation with an Advocate for Animal Rights

According to PAWSsion Project founder Malou Perez, in this time when the “Black Lives
Matter” campaign is blowing up on social media, we are reminded that no one is really above
anyone. We must understand that all lives matter, even lives of stray dogs and

Malou Perez is the founder of PAWSsion Project, which is a Bacolod-based rescue group with
shelters in Bulacan and Bacolod City, Philippines. When her pet dog, Casper, passed away, she
made a vow that she would help all dogs that needed her help. That’s why PAWSsion project was
created.

It began when she saw a Face Book post about 50 dogs that were supposed to be put down by
gunshot. She then gathered like-minded people with passion for stray animals. She did not expect
that her small project would grow at such an exponential rate today, let alone, be featured on
Rappler, Manila Bulletin, ABS-CBN and Cosmopolitan Magazine.
Despite the Covid-19 crisis, she still continues her advocacy. Truly, nothing can stop this fur
mommy from helping fur babies. Below is the highlight of my TEDx team’s conversation with
her last June 2, 2020.

Tell us a bit more about PAWSsion Project.

PAWSsion project started in 2018 that was inspired by a Face Book post about 50 dogs on death
row. I personally shared that post and then, two days later, a family friend who owned a farm
offered her property to be used as a shelter for those dogs.Without second thoughts, I said yes.
Three days later, we rescued those 50 dogs and provided them a home at our shelter. In less than
two years, we now have two shelters in Victorias and Bulacan.

What insufficiency do you see in the government, the local laws and community practices that are
failing our furry little friends?

A lot. I can go and on about this but first and foremost, it’s really about ignorance. Imagine your
dog walking alone in the streets with its collar and maybe even its leash. Even with that apparent
evidence of ownership, local authority has the right to take them to the dog pound. If unclaimed
after a number of days, they also have the right to put your dog down.

What’s worse is that we don’t monitor the way of killing the dogs. They call it euthanasia, but
there are cases when there is not enough budget and the way of putting the dogs down is close to
torture already.

Another saddening thing about this is that when my team and I were leaving with our rescued
dogs from the pound, another truck of impounded dogs arrived. They were very healthy beautiful
dogs. It was very heartbreaking. And the one who ordered the impounding of those dogs was a
barangay/village captain.

We already have an animal welfare act, but the problem is the lenient implementation. I still
know about dog-meat trade, which is horrible.

What is your message to the general public in relation to your advocacy for animal rights?

Please get the word out there. Educate yourselves and those around you because the roots of
animal abuse or any problem in general are lack of information and inability to take action.

Adopt. If you can’t adopt, foster. If you can’t foster, sponsor. If you can’t sponsor, volunteer. If
you can’t volunteer, donate. If you can’t donate, advocate.
Animal rights group calls on public to rescue 100 dogs from death row

MANILA -- Some 100 dogs and a number of cats impounded in Bulacan are currently on "death
row." Their crime? They do not belong to a loving home.

Animal welfare group Pawssion Project said unless the canines and felines will be adopted or
fostered, they will soon be euthanized.

Hence, the group is appealing to the public to give the animals a second chance at life.
On Wednesday, October 21, Pawssion Project will hold a rescue operation and facilitate the
adoption of the strays.

Those interested to participate may reach out to the group or head straight to San Jose del Monte
pound with a valid ID, 1x1 picture, and P500 adoption fee which will include anti-rabies shots
and a spaying/neutering procedure.

The fee, the group explained, will also help fund the food and other vet care needs of the other
shelter animals.

“Please consider adopting. We will be happy to pay for the adoption fees of the impounded dogs,
we will also do a distemper test onsite and we can cover the vaccination and deworming. Just
please, give the impounded dogs a chance,” Pawssion Project wrote on its social media page.
“We really need adopters. We cannot take them all to the shelter.”

While “the city vet does not want to euthanize as much as possible,” the organization said they
are left with no choice as the pound is reaching full capacity.
“They have been there for over a month now... But with the current law and mandate, even with
active spay and neuter campaigns, they cannot refuse to impounding requests as well as people
surrendering at the pound” the organization explained.

“We are thankful to the team of SJDM city vet as they give vitamins, feed the impounded dogs
twice a day, and really push for adoption — but only few come to adopt,” it added.

Those who cannot adopt but wish to extend their help to the animals may instead pledge for an
adoption fee, and donate to fund distemper kits and vaccinations of the dogs, and additional
kennels.

Animal lovers also have the option of sponsoring a rescue.

“If you wish to have a dog/cat rescued by us, kindly help us by sponsoring a rescue. Initial fee
would be P1,100 (included the adoption fee, plus distemper and parvo testing, deworming, and 5-
in-1 vaccine). Monthly sustenance of your sponsored rescue would be P1,000 a month,”
Pawssion Project explained.

“Please encourage people to adopt or at least foster. Donate and sponsor if you cant take in one.
Volunteer during the rescue if you can. And please advocate and help spread the word when you
can. Adopt, don’t shop,” the group pleaded.

Adopting one of the shelter’s residents will save more than just their life. Not only will the dog or
cat finally have the home they have longed for all their life but it also opens a spot for the next
rescue to be brought in — consequentially giving them a better shot at finding a happily ever after
as well.

“They are labeled 'strays' due to no fault of their own, so may we have it in our hearts to look out
and care for them,” Pawssion Project pleaded.
Conclusion

Social Change
According to H.T Mazumder “social change may be define as a new fashion or mode, either
modifying or replacing the old, in the life of people or in the operation of a society“[3].
Social change can be refers to a transformation of culture and social organisations/structures
over time. We are aware that in a modern world, a society is never static and that of social,
political, economic, and cultural changes occurs constantly.
How Does ICT Contribute to Society or Social Changes Development?
The impact of ICT is extensive. As a matter of fact, we experience its effect in our daily lives.
It is however important to note that the benefits are of ambiguous with some being harmful
and other being beneficial. On this paper, I decided to mention few not all on the benefit of
ICT toward social changes and transformation.
Social Transformation through ICT Empowerment
The social transformations that could result from the increasing use of ICTs depend strangely
on verdicts made by organizations and individuals outside our household, many of whom
have great economic leverage, political power or technical expertise. To increase the consent
potential of ICTs, it is important to understand some of their basic features, which make them
a unique kind of technologies. ICTs are general purpose technologies and this means that they
have a standard use through a huge collection of sectors and activities. With gradual society-
wide adoption, GPTs lean towards to disrupt existing social systems and recreate new ones in
their place. Below are some of the social transformations via ICTs,
1. Entertainment
With the advent of new technologies, the world of entertainment is constantly
evolving.
Digital broadcasting has completely changed the way we experience television and radio with
more interactive programming and participation. Digital cameras, scanners, and printers have
enabled more people to experiment with image production. Computer gaming has also been
an important influence in the development of graphical interfaces. Technology has been at the
4
forefront of changes in production and distribution of music, as well as the way in which
people can access and listen to music.
2. Public services
Many of the nation's public services at federal, state and local council levels have become
available through online or ICT dependent facilities from the time when the
Malaysian
government embarked on its massive transformation programme in 2001 which gave birth to
the current Malaysia as one of the giant country in Asia when talking about Social Changes
and Transformation in ICTs infrastructures. Malaysian today can take so many of the public
services online. E.g. they can pay their driving licenses online, file their income tax papers
balance online and many other countless public services. Many of the government
departments make available application forms for one or another purpose online. A lot of
countries embark on these online services as a fruitful result seen from Malaysia.
3. Financial services
Financial services go through huge changes in recent years as a result of the development of
ICT systems. Jane K. Winn* says “without information technology, financial markets
couldn’t consistently acquire information at the same time as their competitors”.[4]
For
examples, internet allows access through use of sage or Microsoft excel software to manage
accounting activities, look at financial record when required, monitor and respond
to
customers enquiries,[11]
4. Business
Businesses in today’s life have promoted a lot with the coming of ICT. Its impact cannot be
over emphasized. For examples ICT helps to increase productivity in business through the
use of social Media’s platforms for marketing and promotion. The use of websites
now
allowed companies to develop new and cheaper ways of offering customers with
opportunities of buying goods and services at their convenient time, and also enhance the
level of customer service. ICT, provides more efficient scheduling of man power and jobs
through the provision of a Human Resource software’s ERP’s System that streamline many of
the task that took too many hours to be completed manually,
5
Pawssion Project really helped animals in rescuing and protecting them in the use of social media
like Facebook and Instagram. They also have a interactive blog site which features their rescued
animals and how can we help their rescued animals, also they have a Youtube channel where you
can see how they rescue and care the animals. Their great kindness in animals is inspiring to
know so it is great that we have Ict tools and apps to share this kinds of events. We can also share
it to help, because sharing is caring.
